The PlayStation 4 – Thetechhacker Review

After long gap nearly seven years later Sony launched a new version of its PlayStation lineup as PS4. It is announced in February 20, 2013 as a successor to PS3. Unlike daily launches bunch of new smartphones, tablets Sony has taken a good gap between its lineup. Moving on to the actual PS4 hardware, game play HD is main standard.

PS4 is launching with seven big game titles like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, FIFA 14, NBA 2K14, Madden NFL 25, Need for Speed Rivals and Knack.

PS4 Controller

The PS4 comes with the DualShock 4 which is ultimately best controller Sony’s ever made. The hardware of PS3 is very robust and design like a solid slab, which attractively sits in front of your television. It is strict gaming console for designed for gaming only not for Blu-Ray discs or any entertainment medium.

Hardware & Design

The PS4 is beautifully designed piece of hardware. It looks like a two solid slabs placed with disc insertion space and light bar console status indicator. On the back side of PS4 it has only HDMI/optical ports, LAN, AUX and internal power supply port. The finishing of PS4 is half-gloss, half-matte which is a pleasant look and feel for eye’s. The full measurements are 275 x 53 x 305 mm.

PS4 Hardware

It doesn’t have the IR port for universal remotes and don’t support third-party remotes like Logitech Bluetooth Harmony. The PS4 doesn’t support the new 802.11ac wireless standard, it supports 802.11b/g/n, and Bluetooth 2.1.

PS4 Backside

You can place the PS4 vertically and horizontally any type you want. The optional vertical stand is available for PS4. Th console sound is very quit, it creates a little vibrations when disc is first loading.

Operating System

The PS4 has similar “XrossMediaBar” interface like in PS3. The best part of the new OS is you can change the audio and display settings without quitting the game. The PS4 supports the guest feature to temporarily download a PSN Profile onto a friend’s PS4.  The organization og Game titles bit confusing in PS4. The games are listed in a endless manor which very time taking to pickup a game instantly.

PS4 UI

The PS4 doesn’t have sleep feature which means it only reboots or shuts down when required. It also don’t support local media playback. The console lacks backward compatibility, you can play games only designed for PS4. This is big drawback for the PS4. In the profile section you can link you Facebook account and you can share your game progress and trophies instantly.

Performance

Performance wise PS3 is the best console till the date. It is designed as a next gen console means it can work as PS3 ( diff between PS3 and PS4 nearly 7 yeras). The best part of the PS4 is its ability to run two apps at once. The PlayStation Store is very similar to the current PS3 store, it still has lack of organization feature.

Conclusion

Sony PS4 is a robust next gen gaming console, designed especially for Games and not for the other entertainment factors. Multitasking, improved DualShock controller and sharing features will make PS4 as a great console. But lack of basic features like backward compatibility, DLNA and MP3 support will make you feel unsatisfied.
