5 Ways To Unblock A Website

Almost all of us have come across this message at one point or another. It can be super frustrating when you think you’ve finally found what you’re looking for, but then you go to click on whatever it is, and you end up being greeted by a message like this. This especially can be a burden on those who travel outside of the United States often, as content they could regularly see in their home country is often blocked in other countries.

The good news is that there are ways to get around these blocks, allowing you to view whatever you want, when you want. Here are 5 ways to unblock a website.

1.Use A VPN Service

What does a VPN service do, you may ask? A VPN service not only protects you from malware, but it also allows you to browse the web anonymously. This can prevent websites from picking up on your personal information and your location, protecting you from geo-targeting, and allowing you to bypass regional restrictions.

Not only should you be using a VPN service while attempting to unblock websites, but any time you are using the internet.  If you connect to public Wi-Fi networks often, you should never be without one! Luckily, there are several options when shopping for a VPN service, and most can be purchased for under $13 per month. Some VPN services can also be used on your cellphone and tablet, which is great news for those on the go.

2.Use A Proxy

Proxies are similar to VPNs in the sense that they allow you to browse the web anonymously. Giving you a substitute IP address, proxies prevent websites from identifying your actual location, as well as your IP address. Proxies work by allowing you to connect to a server, which has its own IP address, and works as an intermediary between your computer and the internet.

There are a several free proxies available for download, though they are not always as reliable as a VPN service. VPNs protect you from your internet service provider collecting your web browsing information and can mask any type of internet traffic, including torrents. Most proxies can only be used on one program at a time and they don’t affect your internet service provider from accessing your information either.

3.Use Google Cache

Google Cache allows you to view a backup of a website that Google has archived. If the website you are attempting to view is not updated frequently, this can be a helpful tool to unblock a website. If the website is updated frequently, as social media websites are, this suggestion is not going to be as useful. For example, you will not be able to use Google Cache to view your news feed on Facebook.

However, if you are attempting to view a web page for specific information, such as for research purposes, this can come in handy. All you need to do to use Google Cache is to type cache: before the URL you are attempting to view. It should look something like this: cache:websitename.com, so if you are trying to visit Google.com, you should type in cache:google.com. One other way to view an archived website is to use the WayBack Machine, offered by Archive.org.

4.Use The Website’s IP Address

One of the easiest ways to unblock a website is to enter the website’s IP address  into your web browser instead of the URL. To do this, open up Command Prompt through the Run window, typically located in your Start menu. If you are unsure how to find the Run window, hit the Windows key on your keyboard, holding it down, while you then hit the R key (Win+R). This will open your Run window.

Once your Run window is open, type cmd into the box and click OK. A window with a black background will pop up and this is your Command Prompt window. Enter the word “ping” into the window, followed by the name of the website.

For example, if you are attempting to access Google’s website, you will enter the following: ping google.com, and then hit the Enter key on your keyboard. Several lines of text will appear in the window, as shown in the image below.

The numbers that appear in parentheses after the name of the website, in this case 216.58.192.110, is the IP address of the website. Enter these numbers, along with the periods that separate them, into your web browser, as you would the URL.

If you are using a Mac, this process will be a little different. You will need to open the Network Utility application. In the Network Utility application, there will be a tab located at the top, labeled “Ping.” Once under the Ping tab, there will be a small rectangular box to enter the URL of the website into.

After you have entered the website’s URL into the box, click the Ping button that is located on the right-hand side of the application, above the large white box. The IP address of the website will then appear in the large white box, in a similar format to the IP address in Command Prompt. Although the IP address method isn’t guaranteed to work, it often will, and is one of the easiest ways to unblock a website.

Unblock Websites5.Use A Translator Website

Another easy, yet useful, way to unblock a website is to use a translator website, such as Google Translate. This is by far one of the easiest methods available. All you’ll need to do is visit the Google Translate website and enter the blocked website’s URL into the translation box.

If you are an English speaker, choose a random language for it to translate from, as English to English translation is not supported. After you’ve entered the website’s URL into the translation box, click the blue Translation button on the right hand side of the page. The website will then appear, allowing you to browse through as you normally would.
