Hily is a dating website. Like many dating websites, it has a sizable community of registered users as more and more people are now attracted by the prospect of dating online due to busy schedules and/or limited options in their real life. Hily also comes as a mobile app and this review will be focusing mainly on the app and its working. Hily, overall, is quite user-friendly, simple, secure and ever-changing. The app mostly follows the website in style and structure and also has some additional benefits which will be discussed below.
Benefits of using the Hily app
The Hily dating app, like most other apps, is fully-featured and quite handy. The interface is smooth and easy to use, the various functions are intuitively named and clearly labeled. You can log in to Hily through your Facebook or Hily account (if you have one). Technically speaking, the app is quite lightweight and can run in the background without needing too much processing power. It can be easily downloaded from the respective app store on your phone for free. The Hily mobile app is quite useful for people who prefer using apps over websites.
How to use the app?
If you are opening the app for the first time, then you would be required to log in via facebook or an existing Hily account. Once you have done so, you will be taken to a screen where you would immediately start seeing other people’s profiles, assuming that there are other Hily members in your area. This screen that you would see is called the “Finder Mode”. Hily has this organizational system in which the different features are compartmentalized into different modes. The other modes are “messages mode”, “events mode” and “settings mode”. Each of these will be explained in detail in this review.
If you have used similar dating apps before, then a lot of things about Hily will seem familiar. There is a very simple mechanism if you are looking to meet someone new. You go to the top-right corner of your screen, tap it and select some filters to be applied. You can set the age range of the people that you want to meet and also specify their gender. When you return to the finder mode, you are only shown those profiles that match your criteria.
Next, you need a way to decide if you are interested in the person whose profile is shown to you. The way to do this is by “liking” or “disliking” their profile. “Disliking” a profile means that it wouldn’t be shown to you again. “Liking” the profile denotes that you have shown interest in that person and this “like” will be recorded to be viewed later in the “events mode” but this is only the half of it. Simply “liking” the profile is not enough. To be able to send a message to that person, it is mandatory that the other person “like” your profile back. This is the concept of “mutual likes”. It is quite a popular concept among dating sites and apps as it helps curb the influx of messages from random users in one’s inbox. Once you obtain a “mutual like” with a person, you can exchange messages back and forth with them in the “messages mode”. It can be accessed by simply tapping the messages bubble icon at the bottom of your screen; beside the icon of finder mode.
Messages mode may appear interesting only if you have a “mutual like” with someone or if you already have some existing conversations or dialogs. If you are looking to initiating a conversation with someone for the first time, simply select their profile in this mode and the chat interface will open up. It may not appear too different from other similar apps that you may have used. Once you send them a message, which could be in the form of text, GIF, or a photo upload, they will receive a notification and they can then choose to message you back. On the same note, every “like” that you give out and every “mutual like” that you obtain is stored for your reference in the “events mode”. This might be useful if you want to keep track of the profiles that you are interested in.
Hily is also quite customizable. The app provides a host of different settings that you can change and modify in order to have an experience tailored to you. To be able to access all the settings of the app, you would need to go to the “settings mode”.
The settings for your profile (which differ from the settings for the app) can be accessed by tapping on the “pencil” icon next to your profile picture.
Here, you can modify some of your basic information such as your name, address and profile picture. Some of the options unique to Hily are the last three options: Status in relationship, Relationship type and Purpose on the site. These features are meant to add more depth to your profile and provide more information to someone viewing your profile. The different sub-options available within these options are shown as follows:
Status in relationship
- In an open relationship
- Seeing someone
- Tell you later
- Purpose on the site
- Long-term dating
- Short-term dating
- New friends
You can now choose to come out of this menu and go for the general settings relating to the app itself. You can do so by tapping on the “gear” icon in the settings mode. Once you do that, you are taken to a screen where you see the filters again, allowing you to set them if you hadn’t done it already, options regarding notifications (most of those are toggle “on” or “off” options) and options for contacting Hily staff. You can contact the staff of Hily by sending them a message. You are free to ask for support regarding any issue you may have come across and the Hily staff usually responds back quite quickly to address your concerns. To keep Hily free of spams/scams, it is a good idea to report any and all suspicious activities that you might have seen and let the staff at Hily do their investigation.
It is difficult to choose the “best” option when it comes to online dating. The only viable approach sometimes is trial and error. The best thing about Hily is that you won’t lose anything my making an error. You are not required to pay to use its features, you are not really required to make and maintain a commitment with someone else on Hily and you are free to leave anytime. However, by giving Hily a go, you may discover something that might keep you there. The app is a very good alternative to the website and is sure to please the smartphone holders who demand lightweight and fast apps for their devices.
