The origin of hashtag goes way back then we assume. It was just considered as a symbol once and later it was adopted by the Telephone dialers. Later, the hashtag became a part of programming languages, particularly the popular “C#”. Many people still calling it as “C plus plus”, as the hashtag symbol looks like two plus symbols. Before the Twitter uses the hashtag as its major linking medium, there is another internet network application uses the hashtag to call for a chat group or topic. That is “Internet Relay Chat”, popularly known as “IRC“.
Many of the new Twitter users may not know that the twitter started its service without any idea of using the hashtag. It was all started with Chris Messina, an open source advocate’s tweet, which proposes the use of “#” like IRC to track topics on Twitter. He mentioned the symbol as a pound in that tweet. It was then named as a hashtag by Stowe Boyd. Though the idea was proposed by these people, the real importance of the use of hashtag was realized when the people on Twitter use the hashtag to know updates about current news and events. In 2009, Twitter officially adopts hashtagging to track the trending topics and search results.
