Gaming laptops today are in a class on their own, and the HP Omen X 2S 15 is pushing the envelope even further. With a secondary screen and cutting-edge in-built cooling system, HP Omen’s new offering is unique, if not outright bizarre.
Launched last year in India, the HP Omen X 2S 15 debuted alongside the HP Omen 15 and HP Pavilion Gaming 15 – establishing their brand further into the gaming market territory. In an interview last year, HP India’s Managing Director revealed that the Omen X 2S is a direct response to India becoming a ‘fast-evolving lifestyle and in select cases, a profession’, and he’s not wrong.
Last year saw substantial market gains for gaming laptops in India across price ranges. Most notable are the high-performing RTX gaming laptops gaining ground, according to Money Control’s report.
This is why HP continues to invest and focus on improving its hardware and services through its gaming division, HP Omen. As gaming laptops continue to evolve, HP is hedging its bets on the Omen X 2S’ innovative form factor and raw computing power to attract more gamers.
But, is it any good?
Packed with the latest high-performance chipsets up to the 9th Generation Intel Core i9-9880H with 8 cores, 16 threads and a base clock of up to 4.8 GHz, the HP Omen X 2S is a computing monster with raw power. It boasts the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 MQ graphics processing unit with 8GB of GDDR6 of VRAM – enabling you to play even resource-intensive AAA games with a minimum of 60 frames per second.
That’s not all. HP details that the Omen X 2S is the first of their gaming division hardware lineup which is overclockable, making it adjustable depending on your computer’s core, power, and memory for optimal gaming. It also packs the latest NVIDIA G-Sync Technology, which synchronises your refresh rate to prevent screen tearing, giving you a better and more consistent cinematic experience.
The Second Screen
While the specs under the hood alone make the HP Omen X 2S one of the most powerful gaming laptops out there, the second screen is what sets it apart. Just above the keyboard is a 1080p touch screen display in a 6 inch IPS panel which is designed to optimise your gaming experience.
In terms of functionality, it can mirror the screen and show you the laptop indicators and benchmarks. In-game mode, however, it can isolate and show you any portion of the screen like the in-game map, sniping crosshairs and any part you want to track. It can also be helpful if you have an instructional video playing if you’re streaming or chatting in-game. With the powerful graphics card inside, you can also just play games like Dota Underlords and keep it running while you continue browsing on the main screen.
Above and Beyond a Gaming Laptop
The HP Omen X 2S 15 has partnered with Thermal Grizzly, which manufactures top of the line cooling materials to manage the thermals of the laptop. It’s the first of its kind to use a liquid metal instead of the usual heat paste in the heat sink. With all these components inside, HP has managed to fit it all in a 14.26 x 10.3 x 0.78-inch chassis – reminiscent of its HP Spectre which is currently the world’s thinnest laptop.
While it can take some getting used to, the second screen and the thermal technology is truly something that other manufacturers must be taking note of. Despite the HP Omen X 2S being on the pricey side, it’s definitely worth the cost if you can afford it.
