You bought a new TV but don’t know where to place it in order to get the best viewing experience? Well, don’t worry you are not alone as most of the new TV owners face the same trouble. However, if you can figure out the ideal sitting distance between you and the TV, then this issue can be resolved.
The sitting distance is calculated by keeping a lot of factors in mind, like the size of the TV, its screen resolution, the field of vision, etc. For instance, if you have a 32 inch TV which has a screen resolution of 1080P, now, if you sit too close to the TV then pixels on the screen will be quite visible due to low screen resolution. And if you sit too far, then you won’t be able to get a better viewing experience.
However, if the same TV has 4k resolution then the pixels won’t tear if you sit close to the screen. But, sitting too close to the TV will affect your field of vision and especially if the TV has a large screen size like 55 inches or more. Thus, finding the ideal sitting distance from the TV is a very crucial part if you want to enjoy the best TV viewing experience.
Why The TV Distance Matters?
1. Picture Quality
The distance between you and the TV can greatly affect the picture quality of the television. This happens especially when you sit too close to your TV. If the TV does not have 4K resolution then you will see the pixels on the screen and the picture quality or image clarity won’t be that good.
2. Eye Safety
Sitting too close to the TV can also cause eye strain problems. To take care of your eyes make sure you sit at an ideal distance from the TV. The TV screens emit harmful blue rays which may cause eye strain and disturb your sleeping patterns.
What’s the perfect viewing distance?
By now you must have understood that different TVs have different ideal viewing distances depending upon their size, resolution, and more.
Ideal TV viewing Distance Based on TV Size and Resolution
There are TV distance calculator which can help you find out the right TV viewing distance, but if you want to calculate the distance manually then you can also do that.
If your TV is an HDTV(1080p), then the ratio between the TV size and sitting distance is around 1.5 and 2.5 times. This means that if you have multiplied the diagonal length of your TV screen by a number between 1.5 and 2.5 to get the ideal sitting distance.
For example, If you have a 40 inch HDTV then the ideal sitting distance from it will be between 60 inches (5ft) to 100 inches (8.5 ft).
And, the recommended TV viewing distance for 4K televisions is between 1 and 1.5 times the TV screen size.
So with this, you can conclude that the higher the resolution of a TV the closer you can sit to it. So if your sitting area is less, then you can go with 4K Television. Similarly, if the distance between your couch and the place you are going to mount your TV is large then you can go with a big-screen HDTV with 1080P resolution.
Sitting distance depending upon the field of view
The field of view or vision is the area a person can see by looking at a fixed position, in this case, the TV screen. For better TV viewing experience, you need to sit at a distance from the TV where it fills up about 30°of your field of view. However, if you want a theatre-like cinema viewing experience from your TV then the recommended angle of view is 40°.
For Cinema View(40°), You need to sit closer to the screen
The minimum angle of view i.e 30° works well for normal TV viewing experience. However, if you want an immersive cinema viewing experience then you need to sit a little closer to the TV so that the screen fills up about 40°of your horizontal field of view. Calculate TV size based on sitting distance
If you have not yet ordered your new TV and don’t know what size will fit best in your room then you can actually find the preferred TV size based on your sitting distance. You just have to divide the sitting distance(inches) by 1.6. For instance, your couch is about 100 inches away from the wall where you would like to mount the TV, then you can divide 100/1.6 to get the idea of TV size you should get.
So, 100/1.6 is equal to 62.5 inches, so you can get either a 60 inch or a 65 inch TV for best TV viewing experience. This is a general formula and works well for all sorts of TVs.
