MacKeeper Review – New Security Features, Camera Protection and Much More

MacKeeper – An App to Master All the Apps for your Mac

Being secure on the internet is one of the top priorities of today. However, the internet isn’t always a culprit for a lack of your computer’s security, as you can be pretty insecure offline. That’s why you need to use a certain antivirus to protect your PC at all costs and today’s example will be MacKeeper. MacKeeper is a solid option for your Macintosh, representing a staple of antivirus software for this platform. Let’s not waste time and jump straight to the features of this giant, shall we?

Features of MacKeeper

As a very important antivirus software, MacKeeper is armed and dangerous when it comes to features. Let’s check them out.

Camera Protection

Not the most important feature, but something you’ll like. Camera Tracker is a feature for notifying you when your camera is turned on and by which app it’s used. Basically, this feature is great for overall security, as the internet scam and hackers often tend to use this method to record people as they are completely unaware. When the option pops up in the taskbar at the top of the screen, you can simply Terminate or Allow a particular app to use the camera. Simple as that.

Data Control and Encryption

Data Control is a superior feature of MacKeeper. This feature has numerous sub-features like Data Encryptor, Shredder, Backup, ZeoDisk and the most interesting, Undelete. With these features, you can easily encrypt your files by hiding them behind a password. Undelete lets you recover previously deleted files, but only if you marked them as restorable. MacKeeper uses the feature called Shredder to do so, and it’s working well most of the time. Generally, MacKeeper offers a respectable performance when it comes to Data Control and Encryption. However, nothing too fancy.

Antivirus and Antimalware Capabilities

MacKeeper is listed as an antivirus software, so I checked its true capabilities. Unfortunately, I found out that it compares poorly to software like Kaspersky, for example. Unlike Kaspersky that has around 97% of malware detection, MacKeeper’s execution is 17% weaker than Kaspersky antivirus. However, when it works well, MacKeeper is excellent at detecting and eradicating the malware and antivirus software. Beware that using MacKeeper as a primary line of defense against unwanted software isn’t recommended.

Disk Cleanup

When it comes to Disk Cleanup, MacKeeper once again has a generous offer. You can perform a Fast Cleanup to quickly get rid of the unnecessary files. Duplicates Finder is here to delete your duplicated files. Coupled with Wise Uninstaller, MacKeeper manages to kick out any unnecessary files from your PC. However, I have a major complaint here. Removing an app should be a piece of cake, right? Well, MacKeeper tries to get in your way by asking you stupid questions like why are you getting rid of the app and even prompts you to explain why. I mean, why bother so much? Nevertheless, if you are patient enough, uninstalling your less-needed app will be always successful.

Anti-Theft Security

Anti-Theft Security is one of those perfect features that I can’t help but praise. If you happen to be a victim of theft, with your Mac being stolen, MacKeeper has an amazing solution for you. First, you need to sign in with your Kromtech account and mark your Macintosh as stolen. When a thief starts a laptop and connects to the internet, an info about laptop’s location is sent to Kromtech servers and a snapshot of a thief is done. This guarantees that you’ll find your laptop in no time. If you don’t find it… well, it may be destroyed by the thief, but I doubt that someone would want to destroy such a valuable machine like Macintosh.

Apple Certified Support

Apple is a serious company and as such, they can be proud of their certified support. In the app itself, you can easily access their certified support with a single click by calling them, sending them an E-mail or using a Live Chat feature, which immediately lets you talk with the support crew. I found the feature very useful as I got stuck a few times using MacKeeper and they successfully resolved my issues. Be sure to try this feature even if you have any questions about the product, not just the issues.

Interface

MacKeeper’s interface is beautiful and it’s a pure joy to use. It displays everything you need in a simple window that’s split into three sections. Starting from the left, we have all of the features listed in several categories. On the right, we have several options for Apple certified support and in the middle, you can see the feature you’ve chosen. Quite frankly, MacKeeper doesn’t exceed my expectations, and there isn’t anything new to behold. If you look at Kaspersky for example, it has a much more modern and streamlined design, unlike MacKeeper’s classic, more cut-down interface. At least, MacKeeper keeps things simple and intuitive, and that’s the way I like it.

Pros

Cons

Verdict

As we are now almost two weeks into the new year, you are wondering if MacKeeper is still worth your time. The rivals like Kaspersky, ESET and Avast are pretty overwhelming and MacKeeper is given a run for its money. With that in mind, I wouldn’t recommend MacKeeper over any of this software simply because it wasn’t that reliable for me and has some unnecessary limitations. For example, why would you bother me if I just want to uninstall the file that I don’t need? Or why the malware detection isn’t improved? If MacKeeper manages to fix all of the issues, I think they can be the kings of Mac security again. But, as of now, MacKeeper is for those who want a good (but not great) protection for a cheap price.
