Asus and OnePlus are known for their affordable flagship smartphones. In the recent past, both the companies did a spectacular job with its handsets. Space is dominated mostly by Xiaomi and OnePlus with Asus trying to get up to the sales mark. Currently, in the market, we just have the OnePlus 6 & the Asus ZenFone 5z in the market which is rocking the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, let us compare the two, and see which one is much better for your money in the comparison ahead.

Design

Both the devices come with the design which complies with the latest trend in the market. Both the ZenFone 5z and the OnePlus 6 have the 18:9 ratio tall boy display, with a dual camera at the back, a notch on the display and an aluminum build. On both the end the devices are protected with Gorilla Glass protection.

OnePlus 6 has a better design language with curved back display and feels premium and good to hold in hand. Asus has the camera sensor to top left side on the back while OnePlus 6 have it according to the symmetry in the center. Fingerprint sensors are placed identically on the center only. Mostly all other parts of the phones are placed in the right place.

Talking about the overall design of both the devices OnePlus 6 have a better rounded and modern design which makes it stand out in the market. While for the ZenFone 5z which was introduced around 7 months back is kind of old as per the design language which tries to mimic the Apple’s, iPhone X

Display

OnePlus 6 & Asus ZenFone 5z have an identical display size at 6.2 – inches. Technology on both the panels are different where OnePlus uses an Optic AMOLED panel, and the ZenFone 5z uses an IPS LCD one. The picture quality of both the displays are quite good and when compared side by side both of them looks nearly identical.

Although as per the DNA display panel on the OnePlus 6 displays inky blacks and vibrant colors due to the AMOLED Panel. It’s in the sunlight when you are going to appreciate the LCD Display of the ZenFone 5z as it is brighter and provide a better illumination compared to the one on OnePlus 6. Asus has also used AI for its advantage and added additional features to the software such as auto color temperature and smart screen on which are going to enhance your experience by a bit.

Performance

Asus & OnePlus both are identical in terms of the SoC used with using the Snapdragon 845 from Qualcomm. Hence the performance of both of them is identical. One minute thing in Asus is that we can expand the storage, while on OnePlus there is no such provision of external SD Card.

Both the phones come with Android OREO, but a customized version is placed by both the manufacturers. OnePlus’s Oxygen OS is more centered towards stock UI with a couple of performance tweaks, and usability tweaks. Asus’s ZenUI reinvents the whole interface of the phone and makes it ages better.

Both the phones are head to head in real-world performance when compared with the synthetic scores the OnePlus 6 gets 281,000 while the ZenFone 5z’s average score is 261,000 which is way lower the OnePlus 6. This is majorly due to OnePlus 6’s Oxygen OS which is much better in terms of performance, where ZenUI lacks due to memory and resource consumption.

Although with both the device you are not going to have a single issue for the performance nor in multi-tasking or playing heavy games. As far as battery life goes both the phones have identical battery life and even Asus uses AI to boost the performance even during low battery.

Camera

OnePlus 6 offers a 16 MP & 20MP duo unit on the back where ZenFone 5z gets a 12MP + 8MP setup on the back. Both the setups are different where on ZenFone 5z we get the secondary camera for zooming, on OnePlus 6 we get for low light. Both the phone performs nearly identical in terms of camera performance. When seen with a keen view we can make out that the images with OnePlus 6 are better in terms of natural tones. Even contrast and low light detailing on the OnePlus 6 is better.

Asus has made the 5z relay on AI for most of its shots while AI is still not perfect, we can wait for the future update to solve some of the issues. The manual mode on Asus is much better contained and comes out with better results.

The front camera of both the phones has similar performance while on the ZenFone 5z the highlights get blown out which is the case even with the rear camera on the Asus. Which means it can be solved with a software update. The camera on the OnePlus 6 is much wider and hence is able to capture more are more people in your group selfies.

Pricing

Asus’s ZenFone 5z is priced starting 30,000 INR for the 6GB & 64 GB Variant, while for OnePlus 6 the same combo comes for 34,999. The huge pricing difference of 5000 INR makes a large difference. OnePlus even offers a couple of different editions based on colors, and only one color option is available for a single combination, whereas on ZenFone 5z you can choose any color for any variant. This makes it easy for the people to get the device of their choice.

Verdict

Both the Asus ZenFone 5z and the OnePlus 6 are better in terms of performance, camera quality, display, build, and ergonomics. If you are on a tight budget you can go with the ZenFone 5z, and if you want a phone with good development then the OnePlus 6 is a better option.
