Oppo R17 Review

Notches and no bezels are what we can summarize for all the devices launching in 2018. Oppo again made it true for another device that they announced recently the Oppo R17. There are a lot of quirks and features of the new device which we will be discussing ahead in the article, but one thing for sure is that the device is quite unique just like the Oppo Find X and the Vivo Nex which was launched by its sister company.

Today we are reviewing the Oppo R17, we will find out what new it has to offer in the device, and what makes the device great in its price range.

Design & Build

Straightaway coming to the design of the Oppo R17 it is quite unique when looked at from the front and the back. On the front, we have a uniquely placed notch which resembles a teardrop, on the bottom we have quite a bit of bezel. Talking about the rear we have the camera placed vertically which is also a dual camera unit while we have a dual tone flash unit also. The Oppo logo below it and all is placed under a glass slab. Another thing to note here is the unique color which even shifts with angle, this completes the design language of the phone.

Talking about the build quality of the device, we have it with the metal body which has glass both on the front and the back. The device feels smooth in hand and has a good heft. Overall the phone feels solid and is made to last. Another great thing to talk about in the design section is the fingerprint sensor unit which is not styling the phone in any way as it is not present visually.

It is found under the display and hence it makes it one of the first smartphone to feature the same. We have the sound system i.e. speaker placed at the bottom, a USB type C port in the middle of the dual speaker unit, on the side we have the power button, two different sim cards tray, and this calls to an end to the placements of the different ports and buttons on the phone.

Display

Oppo in the recent days have been keeping a close eye on the display unit of the phone, the display of the Oppo R17 is quite great in terms of vibrancy, in terms of saturation, in terms of color reproduction, and even in terms of brightness. The device is capable of showing the best of the color pallet in the world and with the AMOLED panel technology, the phone has some really great contrast ratio due to the crispy blacks and crisp vibrant colors.

The display can be made really bright out in the daylight so that it is visible to you in every case, and when it comes to the nightlife, it can then also be turned really dark so that your eyes don’t strain. Glass unit is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 which is the best in class available glass as of now and will protect your phone with all different types of scratches and some of the falls. The fingerprint sensor is under the display it doesn’t interfere with the colors and you cannot see any type of obstruction or any other problem.

Performance

Oppo R17 comes loaded with a Snapdragon 670 Processor which is the top of the line jig from Qualcomm. In order to support it, there is an Adreno 615 which will draw all the different lines during gaming and other graphics-intensive tasks. On the memory side, we have a 128GB storage option available to the users, and another 8GB memory option available to the system to work with i.e. 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. All this makes the phone to work like the apps are riding on top of a buttered slice.

The phone comes with its own Color OS UI which is kind of funky and made to last. Due to the custom UI, the phone will have problems in the system updates, still, for most of the part you can make it up with the features the phone have on offer. The processor can easily ride all the games without any issue and hence you are going to have no problem while using the phone either for normal calls or for heavy gaming. Even multitasking on the phone is not going to be an issue.

Camera

The rear unit on the phone is a dual sensor one and hence you must be rejoiced to know that you will have a great time clicking pictures with the help of AI assistance. The rear unit consists of a 16MP sensor and a 5MP sensor which will be specifically used for depth sensing. On the front, we have a 25MP unit which makes its way to the front of the display and produces some great images.

Talking about the clarity of the pictures taken with the device, the pictures from the rear camera comes sharp with lots of details both in the daytime and in the night. The images also have a lot of colors and even lots of contrasts this makes all the pictures easy to be posted on the social media and even to be shared on WhatsApp. Your friends are surely going to have a nice time posing for the pictures that you take. The AI capability of the phone will enable you to take the best of bokeh shots and you will surely enjoy looking at the DSLR like quality pictures.

Same AI system is built even on the front camera and even with a single lens, the camera is able to take some great bokeh shots. Not even the bokeh shots the phone is capable of taking the best in class normal shots, and the selfies from this lens make you take all your friends in the frame even if they are of a very high number.

Battery

We have a Lithium Polymer battery on the phone which is a non-removable unit just like we see on every other phone nowadays. The battery on the Oppo R17 is quite hefty at 3500 mAh and this results in an amazing battery life.

You can easily use the phone for photographs, videos, calls, social media, and all other phone usage and make it last easily for a day. Although if you are a maniac and uses the phone for constant gameplay then you will suffer hugely on battery life and you will just get around 3 to 4 hours of battery from 90% to 10%.

Verdict

The Oppo R17 is quite great and will help you have a great time with your friends especially on the camera part and the flaunting part where you can tease your friends with the best looks of your device. The apps are still not capable of the teardrop notch and at times there can be controls of some apps/games which you might need to change on the first go.
