How To Stop Automatic Updates On Windows 11

Windows 11

Automatic updates are often troublesome especially when we don’t really want an update but it does so when connected to Wi-Fi.

By the end of this article, you will learn perfectly how to stop automatic updates on Windows 11.

The Windows 11 that we are using currently is still fairly new and it has not been developed to its tail end yet. So it requires frequent updates that optimize existing features and Microsoft’s plan is to add new features slowly that eventually stabilize the latest version of the operating system.

This is how you disable automatic updates on windows 11:

The only downside of this process is that it’ll only last seven days, but that’s enough time for you to eventually look deeper into the settings and disable everything related to an update.

  1. Go to Settings by pressing the Windows key + 1.
  2. Navigate down the left pane to Windows Update and click on it.
  3. Next, go to More Updates and click on the option termed Pause for 1 Week.

By doing this, automatic updates will be disabled on your computer for the next seven days.

Now let us look into Windows Services Settings

This process might make you feel like a little hustle, but it’s worth trying if you want to put things in place permanently.

  1. Press Windows key + R to launch Command-Line.
  2. In the provided search box, type services.msc and then click on OK.
  3. In the Services window that comes up next, navigate down the list of services till you find Windows Update.
  4. Once found, double-click on it to open Windows Update Properties.
  5. Next, under the General tab, navigate to the drop-down menu beside Startup type and click on it.
  6. Select Disable from the options.
  7. Lastly, click Apply and then Ok to save all changes.

From now on Windows 11 will stop downloading updates automatically. However, if you ever need the updates to download automatically again, just follow the above process again but this time, select Automatic from the drop-down menu in Windows Update Properties.

Use Metered Connection

This is an alternate method for turning off automatic updates on windows 11. But the downside of this method is that it may stop other vital background processes from using your internet. But if you’d ever like a little cut down on your internet data consumption, this method is the way to go.

  1. Open settings with the combination of Windows key + I
  2. Navigate to and click Network & Internet on the left pane
  3. Navigate to Metered Connection and click on the toggle bar next to it to enable it.

This should stop certain background processes from using your internet connection, but there’s still one last thing that needs tweaking in the settings:

  1. Go back to the Settings homepage and click on Windows Update.
  2. Next, select Advanced Options.
  3. Finally, click the toggle bar next to Download Updates Over Metered Connections.

However, the updates might make you feel obligatory for some users, especially when they come in an endless stream. There’s nothing new that new updates sometimes come with new bugs; thus, some users might be better without the updates altogether.

While there is no one-way button to disable the different kinds of Windows 11 updates all at once, I am sure this guide was helpful to you and you hope you learned how to disable them easily.
