We have seen almost a decade of smartphone releases where technology has matured to its peak. This way, it is very difficult to differentiate a budget smartphone from a flagship one. However, there is still one constant parameter where every smartphone is tested. This is the battery life and the battery capacity of a device. Now, you would’ve thought that bigger capacity is equal to bigger battery life. Sadly, that is not the case most of the times. This is all due to battery optimization and stuff.
In this regards, Android has been doing well in recent times with various optimizations in the battery. Still, there are devices which barely last a day and we are not even talking about iPhones here. Recently, we have been hearing about how dark mode or black mode helps to increase battery life.
This is said particularly about devices with OLED panels. Because the OLED panels can be switched off in dark mode to conserve battery. Now, all of this was just theory until Google published a report last week. In the report, Google acknowledged that dark mode indeed helps in battery life of a smartphone.
This report was shown by Google at its Android Dev Summit 2018 held last week. Comparing the LCD panel of iPhone 7 with the AMOLED of Pixel, this report showcased a clear difference. Unsurprisingly, the report states that as the brightness of a smartphone’s display increases, its power usage increases in a linear fashion.
However, this power usage decreases significantly when the dark mode is turned on. Meaning that the display pixels are turned off resulting in lower power usage. Also, the power usage decrease is a staggering 63% less which is quite handsome for a smartphone’s battery life. Notably, this test was performed on maximum brightness even when the dark mode was turned on. Also, Google admitted that they are pushing the developers to use the wrong colour inside the apps which is White.
