Huawei files patent for under-display selfie camera in Germany

A new patent has been filed by Huawei for new user interface designs of a smartphone. However, the place where Huawei has filed this patent is completely new. This is the German Patent and Trademark Office which has added a number of patents from Huawei. The patent design reveals that Huawei wants to reserve a camera space inside the display.

Also, the design shows how different parts of the user interface should work with an in-display camera. This clearly suggests that even Huawei is working on its under-display camera like Oppo & Xiaomi and it is coming soon.

However, we can see from the patent that Huawei is working on a design where the camera is still visible even under the display. But we saw Oppo’s prototype earlier which showed that the camera becomes invisible when the camera is not functioning.

Not only is the camera visible, but Huawei’s patent design also shows that there might be an outline which represents the camera position even while the front camera is not being used. Now, the very idea of using a camera under the display was to hide the camera and thus, avoid space to be occupied. However, Huawei’s patent shows that space will still be occupied even when the camera is not taking up space.

However, we must also note that Huawei’s patents are generally for the sake of getting patents and they might never come to any of their smartphones. Still, Huawei is trying to hide the under-display camera with UI elements instead of just hiding it under the display.

One possible reason for doing so is because Oppo mentioned that the selfie camera on its first under-display camera phone might not have the best quality as the light has to go to the camera inside the display which is quite difficult. And for this reason, Oppo is using a special type of lens.
