Huawei Says Good Bye To MicroSD And Hello To NM Cards

Proprietary memory cards are not unknown in the world of technology, and in fact, many formats existed until the consensus was reached that SD cards, or Secure Digital, were the way to go. These, in turn, became microSD over time, reducing the size to better and to adopt smartphones and other devices, but maintained the same standard. It’s time for NM cards.

Now Huawei has decided to take a step forward that sets them apart from their competition. With almost all the dome of mobile telephony saying goodbye to external storage, Huawei has chosen to turn towards its own standard. Yesterday it was presented although in a timid way, and it is about the new nanoSD cards, smaller even than the microSD, and for now, only on board the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro.

The sensation that produces the launch of this new nanoSD is that in Huawei have sought to suppress the triple trays for cards that are already frequently seen in the market. Or, at least, to make them smaller. Maybe that’s why your new nanoSDs (NM cards) are even smaller than current microSDs and, in fact, fit in the same space as a nanoSIM card.

According to the information provided by Huawei during its presentation, the new nanoSD, or NM Cards as the company calls them, are 45% smaller than the microSD and will support transfer speeds of up to 90 Mbps. So, we would speak of an equivalent to UHS-I class 3 cards in traditional SD cards.

The new cards seem to start from 256GB capacity and for now, the prices of them are unknown. What does seem clear is that the cards for the next Huawei cards, including the current Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. It will include only two spaces and will have to choose between placing two SIM cards or combining the main line with the external memory card.

Now it will be necessary to know if this nanoSD or NM Card format ends up being only in the Huawei field or starts being adopted by other manufacturers. Well, remember that heavyweights like Apple, Google and others do not bet on them in their configurations.
