Meizu ‘Zero’ was a marketing stunt says company on failed Indiegogo project

Meizu revealed a smartphone in January this year called the Meizu Zero. This smartphone’s uniqueness was that it had completely zero ports and it was also called the port-less phone. This meant that the smartphone didn’t even have a charging port or headphone jack or USB port. Now, the concept was too good to be true at the moment. However, Meizu decided to launch this project on the crowdfunding platform, Indiegogo.

Meizu Zero

The company had set a fixed goal of $100,000 for its Meizu Zero. Once the project would be backed successfully, Meizu promised to sell its smartphone to backers. But that is not the case as Meizu’s Indiegogo project has officially failed. This is because the project has now ended and it did not receive enough backers.

To be honest, Meizu’s project did not even receive half the number of amount that it had set as a goal. Meizu Zero managed to raise $45,998 USD which is still quite a significant figure. But we assume that this amount was backed by the company or its internal backers only. This project was backed by just 29 people which means that only 29 people were interested to actually buy this phone.

One of the reasons could also be the terribly high price of this smartphone. Meizu gave the only option to its backers which were to get the ‘Exclusive Engineering Unit’ for $1299. In Indian pricing, this equates to a tad more than Rs. 90,000. This could also be the reason for Meizu Zero’s failure on Indiegogo.

But the company’s official statement on this was an even surprising one. Meizu revealed that Meizu Zero was just a marketing stunt by them. In an official statement, Meizu said:

This crowdfunding project was just the marketing team messing about. The holeless phone is just a development project from the R&D department, we never intended to mass-produce this project.
