NASA makes a comparison between twin astronauts to see if space ages human body

You must have heard that our age is different on Earth as that on Mercury or any other planet. This is because the time taken to complete a planet’s revolution around the sun determines our actual age. For example, Earth takes 365 days to complete one revolution around the sun which makes 1 year on our planet. However, Jupiter takes almost 12 years to complete one revolution around the sun. This means that if you are 12 years old on Earth, you are just 1 year old on Jupiter.

Keeping that aside, NASA compared twin astronauts to check if being in space makes changes to human body or not. For this, one of the NASA scientists spent a year on International Space Station. The other astronaut spent the same time on Earth. After that, both the astronauts were compared to see the difference. NASA has found out that the dramatic changes that happen to our body in space are not permanent.

The astronaut who was in ISS had various physical and genetic changes to his body. However, the other astronaut on Earth who is also his twin brother did not go through this changes. Well, you would know that twins go through same hormonal changes at the same time. But this is not true if one twin is on earth and the other is in space.

NASA astronauts, Scott and Mark Kelly, were the twin astronauts examined in this comparison. However, Scott Kelly noticed that his body came back to normal once he landed on Earth. This gives us an idea how our body can change while travelling to Moon or some other planet like Mars.

Also, it was found that Scott’s telemores got longer while he was in space. Telemores are a means with which you can determine aging. This reveals that aging slows when you are in space. However, his telemores increased more than normal when he came back to earth.
