You must be aware that the biggest social media platform in the world. Facebook, suffered a major outage this week. Not only Facebook, other Facebook-owned services such as Instagram and WhatsApp also suffered due to this outage. Now, we call this outage a major one because users were not able to use any of these services for 8 hours. Generally, outages occur for most services but they are fixed within an hour or two. However, this outage took too long and Facebook seems to have lost heavily due to this outage.

However, we are now getting reports that not only did Facebook lose out financially, it lost out in terms of users too. Yes, one of Facebook and WhatsApp’s biggest competitor Telegram gained a huge chunk of users during Facebook’s outage. According to the revelation by Telegram itself, the company added 3 Million new users in just 24 hours during the Facebook outage.

Telegram CEO’s statement

Now, this report has been revealed by Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on his platform itself. He also mentions that “I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours. Good. We have true privacy and unlimited space for everyone.” This is clearly a dig at Facebook as the company is not best known for its privacy management. However, it is still remarkable to see a platform gaining 3 million new users in just 24 hours.

Not only that, Telegram also claims that they have 200 million active users on its platform as of March 2018. Talking about Telegram, it can be seen more as a WhatsApp-like app. However, Telegram has also come under the scanner for not giving information of its users. At one point, Telegram had become a breeding ground for terrorists who took advantage of its end-to-end encryption. On the other hand, some experts have claimed that Telegram is not as secure as it looks.
