Xiaomi was reportedly working on a new smartphone which is not new. However, the interesting part about that smartphone was its platform. Obviously, it was reported to be based on Android but there was a slight difference. This smartphone was reported to be based on the Android Go program launched by Google. Now, Android Go is a trimmed down version of Android which is built for smartphones with 1GB of RAM or less. Normally, Android would lag on the devices which have less RAM and storage. Therefore, Android Go was built so as to bring Android to the masses.
Finally, that smartphone from Xiaomi has been launched and is based on Android Go. This smartphone comes as a part of the newly-established Redmi brand from Xiaomi. The smartphone is named as the Redmi Go. It is also reported that Redmi Go will be available in European markets by February. But there is no announcement regarding Indian launch or pricing details. Regarding the price of Redmi Go in European markets, the smartphone will sell for as low as $90. We do believe that Redmi Go will come to India. And if the European pricing is to be kept as a reference then the Indian pricing should be around the INR 5000 mark.
With the launch of Redmi Go, Xiaomi has participated in both the Android One and Android Go programs by Google. A few years ago, we would not have imagined any Xiaomi phone running without MIUI on top. As for the specifications of Redmi Go, it is a smartphone having 5-inch HD panel running on Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. The device has a 3000 mAh battery and comes with an 8mp rear camera and a 5mp front camera.
As for the RAM and storage, Redmi Go comes with 1GB of RAM and has storage options of 8GB and 16GB. Now, this could feel very low for most of the users but it is plenty for the users who are still on feature phones. Even Google has launched Android Go targeting users in the developing countries.
