Microsoft completes acquisition of Github for $7.5 billion

Microsoft earlier announced that it will be acquiring Github for an amount of $7.5 billion. This was a big announcement which came as a surprise all over the world. Also, the announcement was received with mixed reactions around the world. Due to the fact that Github is an open-source platform for sharing codes and distributing to the world. However, Microsoft is a closed-source company so people doubted that Github will remain open source anymore. However, there has been no change to Github ever since the acquisition was announced.

To clarify the stance of Microsoft and Github after its merger, both the companies released a joint statement. In the statement, both the companies announced that “GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos, operate independently and remain an open platform”. This is great news for all the open-source enthusiasts out there. What this will do is it will boost the platform which is Github even more. Also, it will not hinder any operations which were going on at Github. Apart from that, Microsoft is known to have shifted Github to Microsoft Azure.

Also, you will be interested to learn that former Xamarin CEO, Nat Friedman, will be the new CEO of Github. Nat will have to report to Scott Guthrie who is a Cloud + AI Group Executive Vice President at Microsoft. On his appointment as new CEO of Github, Nat said that “We will improve core scenarios like search, notifications, issues/projects, and our mobile experience. And of course, we are excited to make GitHub Actions broadly available”. He also added that “Our vision is to serve every developer on the planet, by being the best place to build software. This is a dream opportunity for all of us at GitHub, and we couldn’t be more excited to roll up our sleeves and start this next chapter.”
