We have seen that the smartphone sensors are getting bigger and bigger every day. As of now, we have seen smartphones with 48MP primary sensor which is Sony’s IMX586. But there are reports regarding Xiaomi and other Chinese smartphone manufacturers coming up with a 64MP primary camera phone too. Amidst those reports, we have yet another sensor for smartphone cameras. For this camera sensor, humungous is a small word because this is a 108MP camera sensor from Samsung.

Yes, Samsung has unveiled this sensor in its ISOCELL lineup. It is also revealed that the first smartphone with this 108MP camera sensor from Samsung will be Xiaomi. By the end of August, mass production of this sensor is also expected to commence. This means that we will see the 108MP camera smartphone from Xiaomi pretty soon. Samsung says that the sensor is thanks to a collaboration between Samsung ISOCELL and Xiaomi.

This camera sensor named Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX comes with a 108MP resolution. This same sensor was revealed to have a 64MP resolution which has now been bumped up to 108MP. Also, the sensor size of 1/1.33 inch makes this sensor as the first to adopt this large sensor size. However, we will only get 27MP resolution photos in reality from this sensor due to the pixel binning technology.

ISOCELL Bright HMX, however, is capable of shooting 6K videos as well at 30 frames per second. With this sensor, Samsung aims to revolutionize smartphone photography as the camera sensor is the same as we see on DSLR cameras these days. One thing to note here is that Xiaomi has not confirmed yet as to whether a Redmi smartphone or Mi branded smartphone will feature this sensor. In any case, we are likely to see a smartphone with 108MP camera launching pretty soon.
