Samsung Has Just Patented an In-Display Fingerprint Scanner that Works on the Entire Screen

We have known that the current trend in the smartphone industry is to have an in display fingerprint scanner. Currently, Chinese OEMs like Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei have launched their latest flagship smartphones with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Also, it is expected that the OnePlus 6T from OnePlus will come with an in-display fingerprint scanner as well. Now, the major OEMs like Apple, Samsung and Google have not yet followed this trend. But, Samsung recently applied for a patent of an optical fingerprint scanner on the screen.

This news started rumors regarding the possibility of Samsung Galaxy S10 having an in display fingerprint scanner. Now, there is a twist in the tale here. We have known that currently, the in-display fingerprint scanners are only able to scan on a particular part of the screen.

But, Samsung has patented the in-display fingerprint scanner technology which can scan fingers from any part of the screen. Whenever a user places his/her finger on the screen,  the processor increases the brightness of the screen and the finger is scanned thrice to verify its authenticity.

Apart from the ease of use and versatility, this sensor is believed to be much faster than the current sensors. Also, we have known that Samsung has already opposed the idea of adding a notch to their smartphones. We know that Samsung has already mocked Apple as well as Google for adding a notch to their latest flagship phones.

This also means that Samsung would be heavily criticized if it adds a notch on their next flagship smartphone. Therefore, Samsung is more likely to develop a technology by which it can integrate the front-facing camera inside the display. We believe it is highly unlikely for Samsung to come up with this technology for the Galaxy S10 or the Note 10 but the company is working hard for it to be implemented by 2020. Therefore, it will be interesting to see the design that Samsung chooses for its next flagship phones.
