Most common problem in WiFi network is a poor reception and slow transfer rates. If you’re not getting the range you expected in the home or office wireless network, there are many ways you can expand your signal range.
Getting a good strength WiFi signal in every corner of the house is somewhat difficult. Walls and doors can decrease the signal strength. You can overcome this problem by following simple steps.
By Adjusting Router Position
Place the router at a height in some central location and away from other wireless devices. Make sure that the router is not placed near something metallic windows, microwaves or grills as that will weaken the wireless signals. Avoid mirrors as they can reflect the wireless signals away from the preferred direction.
Custom Router Firmware
Most routers don’t allow you to increase the power output. Install the DD-WRT firmware on your router.DD-WRT is a Linux-based firmware for wireless routers and wireless access points. It is compatible with several models of router and access point. Using relatively simple firmware upgrade, you can boost your wireless signal.
Upgrading Router Antenna
Upgrading antenna of Wireless router can increase the signal range. You can easily upgrade the antenna with simple material like the sheet of Aluminum foil. Default antenna is Omani-directional, replacing with a uni-directional antenna is a good option. Build a parabolic reflector around your router’s antenna. It can increase signal strength and signal angle exactly where you want.
By Using Repeater
Use wireless repeater to extend wireless range. A wireless repeater will take an existing signal from a wireless router or access point and rebroadcast it to create a second network. Those outsides of the primary network will be able to connect through the new “repeated” network.Place the wireless repeater midway between your wireless router or access point and your computer, and you’ll get an instant boost to your wireless signal strength.
Regular Firmware Updates
Updating the firmware of your router is another option to increase signal strength. Router manufacturers regularly make firmware upgrades to their routers. Sometimes, these improvements increase performance.
By Changing Wireless Range
Wireless 802.11g routers offer good WiFi signal strength, but if you plan to stream videos around the house or transfer large files across devices, consider other Wireless range routers like Wireless 802.11n. These are capable of higher data transfer rates than Wireless G routers.
