Chuwi Hi9 Tablet Review

Chuwi Hi9 Tablet Review

Nowadays, the attention is shifted more towards smartphones than tablets, as if tablets aren’t that great. In fact, some tablets are very good at replacing your PC and giving you a possibility to use them as portable computers. The tablet we are going to review today probably isn’t that popular, and it’s a budget-oriented device, aimed towards the less-demanding users. Let’s take a look at Chuwi Hi9 Tablet.

Chuwi Hi9 Design

Chuwi Hi9 is an 8.4″ tablet and as such, it’s a little bigger and robust in its design when compared to its successor the Chuwi Hi8. However, where many tablets fail to deliver, Chuwi Hi9 manages to be great, and that’s overall design. With the rounded edges, relatively thin design and a comfortable material, Chuwi Hi9 is very comfortable to use. To be exact, 7.9mm of thickness is what’s located here, and it’s simply mind-boggling for the tablet this cheap. The bezels are relatively thin, although I would like a little fewer bezels in the lower and upper department. This makes this device much bigger than it is (and it’s already pretty big for my hands) and gives a feeling of robustness. Overall, it’s a beautiful tablet, with a solid build quality and modern design.

Chuwi Hi9 Display

The display comes at aforementioned 8.4” in size with the resolution of 2500×1600 pixels. If you think better, 2500×1440 is 16:9 ratio and this one… well, it’s sort of 16:10, which is quite odd. Because of this, the tablet is pretty wide, so holding it with a single hand is nearly impossible for the people with small hands. On the brighter side, the screen is razor-sharp and the pixel density is up to par with some high-end tablets. It’s an IPS display, so viewing angles are solid, although I would like AMOLED display better.

Chuwi Hi9 Performance

Performance-wise, Chuwi Hi9 is a mid-range performer, with MTK8173 2.0 Quad-Core CPU, PowerVR GX6250 GPU 4GB RAM, and 64 GB ROM. The CPU is quite old, though, as it’s introduced back in 2015. With these components, Chuwi Hi9 manages to be a great performer when it comes to some casual video streaming, surfing the internet and mild multitasking. You can play non-demanding games as well, but don’t expect this one to chew and swallow every single game you throw at it, at least not at reasonable FPS number. 64 GB of internal memory should be enough for the needs of an average user and that’s a good thing. All in all, Android 7.0 works great here, and optimization is quite impressive for this price range. I would say, this is a solid entry-level tablet.

Chuwi Hi9 Camera

Tablets aren’t exactly devices equipped with high-quality cameras, but it’s still there for sake of video calls and occasional shooting. On the back, Chuwi H9 sports a 5.0 MP camera, which isn’t all that impressive. First, the resolution is low and the camera doesn’t give enough visual fidelity, especially in low-light conditions. On the front side, 2.0 MP camera is solid for Skype calls, but it’s still a means to an end. If you are buying your tablet and you care about the camera, I would suggest looking for a device with a better one.

Verdict

Chuwi Hi9 is a great tablet for the price and it surely comes with some positive and some negative things. The positives are still quite strong and they easily outweigh the negatives, which is still good news for this bad boy. With its decent size and razor-sharp screen, Chuwi Hi9 is excellent when it comes to watching TV shows and series, as well as spending your time on YouTube. Games look stunning and with its beautiful design, you’ll want it next to you at all time. However, Chuwi Hi9 isn’t great when it comes to snapping pictures of your favorite places, family or yourself and it can be pretty robust for the users with small hands. But, for a price of $180, Chuwi Hi9 is still a solid performer and a smart option for budget-oriented users.
