Mac systems come with a fully functional or polished version of the Macintosh Operating System. Apple conducts various tests and several beta versions of MacOSX before public release. It is a well-known fact that MacOSX is a less error-free operating system when compared to Windows. However, some errors can happen occasionally. One of the most common errors we see in Mac is “No camera available” during a video call.
This is a quite irritating error and happens during a call. If you are having the No camera available on Mac, try one of these methods to rectify the issue.
1. Update your App with the latest update
In many cases, a successful update of the latest app version can solve many problematic errors. For example, if you are using Skype to make video calls and the camera is stopped working during a video call in Skype, then there are chances of you are using an older version of the Skype app. Regularly software developers release the latest updates for bug and error fixes. Update the video calling app you are using in the App store and check the issue is resolved or not.
2. Reboot the machine
A simple and quick fix for any kind of error is a reboot. When you reboot the Mac, the problematic error may fix after the reboot. If there is any code corrupted during the usage, a reboot will refresh the cache of the corrupted one and will work fine after in most of the cases.
If the rebooting is not fixed the “camera not available” error on the Mac, follow the next method to resolve.
3. Force Quit VDCAssistant and AppleCameraAssistant
VDCAssistant and AppleCameraAssistant will help the camera to run on Mac OSX. These two processes are designed to support camera functionality. With a simple command, you can kill both the processes and start again.
1. First, shut down any app that is using a camera on your Mac. For example, Skype, WhatsApp, etc.
2. Now open Terminal on your Mac.
3. Type the following command in the Terminal window and execute it by pressing enter.
sudo killall VDCAssistant
4. Now again in the terminal window, execute the following command to kill the AppleCameraAssistant process.
sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant
Once you have done the above process, now open the video messaging app you use to check the camera working or not.
4. Resetting NVRAM
Resetting NVRAM is the last and ultimate option to fix the “No camera available” error on your Mac. If you are failed to restore the camera working after using all the above methods, then try this final method to solve the issue.
NVRAM (Non Volatile Random-Access Memory) works like the BIOS in Windows. Same as BIOS, NVRAM stores many system core settings which run when your Mac boots up. Resetting the NVRAM will clear the problem causing settings. When you reset the NVRAM all the existing setting will delete and comes to the default settings.
Follow the below steps to reset NVRAM settings.
- Shut down your Mac.
- Now power it on and immediately hold down Open, Command, P, and R.
- Hold these keys for around 20 seconds until you hear a boot sound.
- Now navigate to System Preferences to reset any of your customizations.
