Steps To Fix Contact Names Showing As Numbers On iOS

If you have been using a smartphone for calling or messaging and you have a contact which you interact with frequently, it is quite obvious that you will save their number. This is so that the next time that same number calls, you know who it is from the saved contact and not have to remember the number.

This also helps when you just see numbers which means they are unknown calls so you can reject them. However, a new problem has been detected in iOS where the contacts which have been saved also show as just numbers when they are calling.

On further investigation, you will find that their numbers are actually saved. While this is a bug, it can be quite embarrassing too because someone would feel that you have not saved their number even though you have done so.

So we now have ways in which you can avoid this disaster and fix the issue of calls only showing numbers instead of names on iOS:

1. Reboot your iOS device

The first and the most efficient way to fix this issue is to simply reboot your device. Rebooting is basically the technique of turning off your device and then turning it back on.

So all you have to do is switch off your phone as you would normally do. Once it is switched off, wait for a few seconds and then turn it back on which will mean a successful reboot has been completed.

2. Hard Reboot/ Force Restart your iOS device

For doing a hard reboot or forcing restart on your iPhone X/ Xs series or 11 series, you will have to follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Press the release the Volume Up button on your device.
  2. Now, press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Now, press and keep holding the Power button.
  4. You should hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo which tells you that the device has been rebooted.

For iOS devices with a home button, you can force restart your device by following steps:

  1. Press and hold both the Power button and the Home button at the same time.
  2. Once you see the Apple logo, it means that your device has been rebooted.

3. Check iCloud Contact Settings

If the issue still persists even after rebooting, you should look at the iCloud Contact Settings on your iOS device.

  1. For this, go to Settings on your device and go to the iCloud at the top of your screen.
  2. Now, click on iCloud and see that the “Contacts” is set to ON and enabled.

This means that the contacts will be backed up on iCloud. If it is disabled, enable iCloud backup for your contacts and this should fix the issue.

While the reboot should solve this issue for you, we have seen cases where the iCloud method is needed so you should try both of them.

If the issue still persists, it should be fixed in a future iOS update.
