How to let important calls ring in iPhone focus mode (iOS 15–17)

To let important calls ring on your iPhone while a Focus is on, open Settings > Focus, pick the Focus, tap People and add those contacts (or set Calls From to Favorites). For people who must always get through, even in Sleep or Silent mode, turn on Emergency Bypass in their contact card.

Focus is great for cutting out distractions, but nobody wants to miss a call from family, a doctor or the office. In this article, we will show you exactly how to make sure the right calls still ring on iOS 26, and what to check if it is not working for you. The steps are the same on iOS 18, and very similar on iOS 16 and 17.

Will my iPhone ring when Focus is on?

It depends on how that Focus is set up. When a Focus is active, your iPhone only rings for:

  • People you have allowed in that Focus, or the group you chose under Calls From (for example, Favorites or All Contacts).
  • A second call from the same person within three minutes, if Allow Repeated Calls is on.
  • Contacts that have Emergency Bypass turned on.

Everyone else is silenced. Their calls still come in, but they go quietly to Recents and voicemail, and you will see a missed call later.

Keep in mind that every Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work, Personal, Driving and any custom one) has its own list. Allowing someone in Work does not allow them in Sleep.

How to allow calls from specific people in a Focus

This is the most common fix, and it works for any Focus.

  1. Open Settings and tap Focus.
  2. Tap the Focus you use, for example Do Not Disturb or Sleep.
  3. Under Allow Notifications, tap People.
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications From is selected at the top.
  5. Tap Add People, choose the important contacts and tap Done.
  6. Tap Calls From (labelled Allow Calls From on some versions) and choose who can ring: Allowed People Only, Favorites, All Contacts or Everyone.

If you chose Silence Notifications From instead, iOS works the other way round: everyone can reach you except the people on that list. In that mode you will also see an Allow Calls from Silenced People switch.

How to make Favorites always ring on iPhone

If you already keep your important people in Favorites, you do not need to add them one by one.

  1. Go to Settings > Focus and pick the Focus.
  2. Tap People, then Calls From.
  3. Select Favorites.

Now anyone in your Favorites list can ring through that Focus. To add someone to Favorites, open the Phone app, open the contact and tap Add to Favorites. Repeat the Calls From step for every Focus you use, including Sleep.

Note that Favorites only covers Focus. If your iPhone is in Silent mode, Favorites will vibrate but not make a sound. For that, you need Emergency Bypass.

How to turn on Allow Repeated Calls

Allow Repeated Calls lets a second call from the same person within three minutes ring through, even if they are not on your allowed list. It is a good safety net for real emergencies.

  1. Open Settings > Focus and choose the Focus.
  2. Tap People, then Calls From.
  3. Turn on Allow Repeated Calls.

On older iOS versions, the same switch also appears on the Do Not Disturb screen. If you never want a stranger’s second call to wake you, leave it off and rely on Emergency Bypass instead.

Does Sleep Focus allow calls?

By default, Sleep Focus silences calls from everyone except the people and groups you allow. So yes, Sleep can allow calls, but only if you set it up.

  1. Go to Settings > Focus > Sleep.
  2. Tap People and add your important contacts, or set Calls From to Favorites.
  3. Turn on Allow Repeated Calls if you want urgent callers to get through on a second try.

If you use a sleep schedule from the Health app, it turns on this same Sleep Focus, so the same People settings apply.

Emergency Bypass: make a contact always ring

Emergency Bypass is the strongest option. It lets one contact’s calls ring with sound and vibration even when a Focus is on and your iPhone is set to Silent.

  1. Open the Contacts app (or the Contacts tab in the Phone app) and choose the person.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Ringtone and turn on Emergency Bypass. Tap Done.
  4. To let their texts through too, tap Text Tone and turn on Emergency Bypass there as well.
  5. Tap Done to save the contact.

Calls and texts are set separately, so turning it on for Ringtone does not cover Messages. Use it only for a few people, like a partner, parents, kids or a carer.

Still not working? Check these

If your important calls are still silenced (or a “this did not work” moment brought you here), go through this list.

  • Wrong Focus: Swipe down to open Control Center and see which Focus is actually on. You may have set up Do Not Disturb, while Sleep or a custom Focus is the one running.
  • Focus shared across devices: With “Share Across Devices” on in Settings > Focus, a Focus started on your Mac, iPad or Apple Watch also turns on for your iPhone.
  • Silent mode: Allowed People and Favorites ring through Focus, but they will not make sound in Silent mode. Use Emergency Bypass, or switch Silent mode off.
  • Number saved differently: If the person calls from a number that is not saved in their contact card (for example a work line or with a different country code), iOS treats them as unknown. Add every number they use.
  • Silence Unknown Callers or call screening: In Settings > Apps > Phone, unknown-caller settings can send unsaved numbers straight to voicemail or screen them. Check these if new numbers never ring.
  • Emergency Bypass is on but quiet: Make sure the contact has a ringtone assigned (not “None”) and your ringer volume is up. Turn Emergency Bypass off and on again, then test with a real call.
  • Call blocked: Check Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts to make sure the number is not blocked.
  • Restart and update: Restart your iPhone and install the latest iOS update from Settings > General > Software Update. Some users have reported Emergency Bypass bugs after major updates that a later update fixed.

Practical tips

  • Use different lists for different Focus modes: only family for Sleep, team and clients for Work.
  • Favorites or Allowed People Only is better than Everyone, which defeats the point of Focus.
  • Test your setup by asking a friend to call you while the Focus is on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a priority contact on iPhone?

iPhone does not have a single “priority contact” switch. The closest options are adding the person to your Favorites and allowing Favorites in your Focus, or turning on Emergency Bypass in their contact card so they always ring.

Can unknown numbers ring during Focus?

Only if you set Calls From to Everyone, or if they call twice within three minutes with Allow Repeated Calls turned on.

What is the difference between Allowed People and Emergency Bypass?

Allowed People works inside one Focus and covers calls and notifications from that person. Emergency Bypass works across every Focus and Silent mode, and you set it separately for calls and texts.

Why does it say a call was silenced by Focus?

It means the caller was not on that Focus’s allowed list. Add them under People, allow Favorites, or turn on Emergency Bypass for them.

Does allowing calls also allow app notifications?

No. People and Apps are set separately in each Focus, so allowing someone’s calls does not let other apps notify you.
