Windows Startup Repair: How to Perform it?

Windows Startup Repair

Windows Startup Repair is a very useful utility that allows you to resolve common startup problems in Windows. If you don’t know what is causing the issue and you are not able to get into Windows, the first thing you have to try is performing a startup repair. It simply goes through a series of checks to identify the issue such as a corrupted file that is essential for the startup and tries to fix the problem. If the tool is successfully able to perform the fix, you will regain access to the OS once again.

Windows Startup Repair From the Boot Menu

Windows has several features built-in that allow solving problems on its own. The Windows boot menu is heaven when your PC runs into trouble. Windows startup repair is no exception. You can perform the Windows startup repair from the Windows 10, 8, or 8.1 boot menu following these steps.

The boot menu will automatically show up if Windows cannot start or face troubles. If not, try pressing F8 while the system starts (before seeing the Windows logo during the startup).

  1. In the boot menu, click on the Troubleshoot option.
  2. Then the Advanced Options.
  3. There you will see the Startup Repair option which you can click to start the Windows startup repair.
  4. Provide the credentials if asked.

Windows will automatically try to solve any startup issues. If you are using Windows 7, it will show you a different screen with the option Launch Startup Repair (recommended). Just press Enter and then choose Repair your Computer option to start the startup repair process.

If it fails, the system will show you a number of options that you can try such as inserting the Windows installation media, which leads to our next method.

Use the Windows Installation Disk to Run Startup Repair

If the startup repair from the Windows wasn’t able to solve the issue, you can try inserting the Windows installation media and running the repair using the files in it. Here is how to do it.

  1. Insert the Windows installation CD/USB to your computer.
  2. Get into the Windows installation screen.
  3. Choose the language and location and click Next.
  4. On the next step, you will see an option called Repair your computer at the bottom left corner of the window. Click on that.
  5. Windows will now try to fix the issues using the installation media.

This might resolve most of the issues that are preventing Windows from getting started. If not, you can try the additional steps we mentioned in our article on fixing the 0xc00000e error or fixing the common Windows startup issues.
