You might be aware that similar to Apple’s macOS and Microsoft’s Windows OS, Google also has a desktop operating system called Chrome OS.

While Google’s Chrome OS might be limited in terms of functionality compared to its competitors, it gets the job done. Also, Chrome OS is preferred by students since it is easy to use, cheaper and allows them to use Google services which are well-optimized. Apple also accused Google of selling its Chromebook devices for a lower price in order to get more customers into their services business.

Now, it is understood that Google is testing a new Files app which is what you would call File Explorer in Windows and Files in macOS. Basically, it is the app where you can see everything inside your laptop.

You can easily understand that this is the most important app and you will use it almost on a daily basis so it is important that the design of this app is good. For this reason, Google is redesigning its Files app and giving it a material design touch.

As you might have read, Google’s design language is called material design and it is available on Android devices already. So it is now time to bring that same design language to apps on Chrome OS too.

A few months ago, Google started to give hints that a material design makeover of the Files app is coming. Now, the flag which was added back seems to be fully functional as if you enable the flag, you will see the material design inside your Files app.

It must be noted that the change is not a massive one but a subtle one at that. Apart from that, the company is also testing a way to sideload Android apps on Chrome OS without the need to enable developer settings.
