Blackberry has not been doing well in the mobile segment with the last few devices. A couple of years ago Blackberry was the best handset maker when BBM and iMessage ruled the world. Now Blackberry is handled by TCL where they deal with the hardware while the original Blackberry team is coordinating for the software customization for their products and another set of products who need a more secure Android system. Today we are going to review the Blackberry Evolve and see if it is going to do any magic with the people on the security point of view, and even in the performance, let’s see in the review ahead.
Design & build
Blackberry has also entered the full-screen display market where the screen ratio on the front is going to be the full screen and no physical QWERTY keypad. On the top, we have the camera unit, sensors, and earpiece, on the bottom bezel we have the blackberry branding. The screen is curved from the sides, and it makes it a great pleasing display to have a look at.
On the back, we have the dual camera unit placed vertically in the center and just below that we have the fingerprint scanner, on the side, we have the flash while exactly in the center back position we have the blackberry logo. The back feels rubbery and it makes it feel quite good, the phone does have a metal chassis in the between and this makes the phone feel solid in hand. The weight distribution of the phone is done quite well and hence the phone feels awesome in the hand. Another great thing about the design is that due to the rubberized back the phone is grippy and you can easily grip on to the phone without worrying about it slipping from the hand.
Display
On the Blackberry Evolve we have a 5.99 – inch unit which has a resolution of FHD+ and yes the display is an 18:9 ratio one. By the standards of Blackberry, the phone comes with an exceptional display quality, and the panel is capable of really churning out some great colors which are saturated and have a good quality of sharpness. There is no color shifting that you can see on the panel even on the extreme angles this makes the display to stand out.
Blackberry Evolve have evolved with the display panel, and you can easily watch movies and media files without any issue while you are traveling in a bright sunny day. When it comes to low lighting situations the phone can easily get low in brightness and hence at night time it will be of great importance as it will not strain your eyes much. There are even night modes and custom color settings so that you can set the colors and saturation just according to your needs so your eyes are not strained much.
Performance
The Blackberry Evolve comes with a Snapdragon 450 SoC which is assisted by a 4GB RAM and 64GB Internal Storage option. The phone looks good at least on the paper due to the Octa-core CPU and an average GPU but in the real world condition, it doesn’t translate the same. Almost at half the price of the phone, there is better processor available which makes the price to performance of the phone really low.
Gaming on the Blackberry Evolve is not that great and you can barely run the Temple Run and Subway Surfer game on the highest frame rates. There are stuttering which you can clearly see during the gameplay, even when you are using the phone extensively you will get issues for using more than 2 heavy apps at the same time. When it comes to normal usage on the phone, it can perform well and you will have a nice time using the phone for daily calling, and social media task.
Camera
The camera of the Blackberry Evolve is a just 13MP dual shooter at the back while on the front we get a single 16MP shooter. The front camera setup is a wide angle one, hence you can take those group selfies which is not possible with the other phones your friends have in the group.
The rear camera of the phone due to its dual camera setup performs really well, and the optimization for the dual camera unit is done so well that you can get some best DSLR like shot from the mobile phone. When it comes to the saturation and colors they are quite well and the images are breathtaking when you watch them on big screens.
During the night time, the camera is not so great and we can find that the images are blurry or shaky due to low shutter speed in order to compensate for the low lighting, even the good images have grains which spoils the experience of the phone.
Battery
The phone is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery which is capable enough to offer you a day-long usage. When you use the mobile phone for normal usage such as calling and normal social media then the phone can easily last for around a day and a half, while when you are using the phone for extreme gaming and multitasking then the phone can barely last more than a day and you will have to charge the phone at the end of the day. Charging time taken via the phone is pretty good and you won’t have any issue with the low battery.
Verdict
The Blackberry Evolve is a good phone considering the security it has to offer especially on the software side. Do note that the performance from the phone is going to be limited and it will only be beneficial if you are looking for a good quality phone with a good security system. Do have a look at the Samsung On8 & LG Q8 also if you want to compare the phone with some similar speed devices.
