Asus made an announcement earlier this year regarding the latest flagship smartphone called the Asus 6Z. However, the same smartphone is named as the Asus Zenfone 6 in global markets. This is after the Delhi court told Asus to remove the Zenfone branding from its smartphones. Essentially, Asus 6Z and Asus Zenfone 6 are the same devices with different names.
Talking about the Asus 6Z, we know that not many gave Asus a chance a few years back. However, things drastically changed when Asus announced last year that it is ditching its custom OS in favor of Stock Android. Also, Asus went on to price its Asus Zenfone 5Z aggressively too. This made the company revive its position in Indian markets.
With the Asus 6Z, Asus has made a spectacular comeback as the smartphone comes with a unique design as well as attractive pricing. Also, the smartphone offers similar specifications to the OnePlus 7 while being priced lower. For Asus to compete with the pricing of OnePlus which was known as a “flagship killer” brand is spectacular in itself.
One of the biggest innovations in the Asus 6Z is its unique flip camera. You might have already seen cameras which have a pop-up mechanism, sliders as well as notch and in-display cameras. However, Asus has implemented a flip mechanism which means there are only two cameras for the entire smartphones. Both the smartphones flip ahead when you trigger the selfie and go back to its position while the back camera is enabled.
Design & Build
Talking about the design of Asus 6Z, there is nothing much to talk about as there is a flip camera at the top along with Asus branding at the bottom. Also, you can see that the physical fingerprint scanner is still present which might please many fans. It can also be said that the Asus 6Z design is “boring” in a good way.
In terms of build quality, the smartphone feels premium in hand and is built to last. The flip camera mechanism is also rigorously tested, as claimed by Asus, and holds up well in our testing too.
Display
Asus 6Z’s display is a 6.4-inch bezel-less panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection. On the back, you get a Gorilla Glass 3 protection as well. This display on the Asus 6Z is an AMOLED one which means that the blacks look deep and it will be hard for you to differentiate between the display and the rest of the phone.
Performance
The performance of Asus 6Z should be absolutely stellar on paper as it has a Snapdragon 855 processor, runs on Stock Android and comes with 6GB RAM. While it is true in real-life performance as well, you will not get the same smoothness that you expect if you are coming from a OnePlus device. Because it is now clear that OxygenOS from OnePlus is in a league of its own. However, you will still get flagship performance and playing games on this device will be a pleasant experience
Camera
The dual-camera setup on Asus 6Z comes with a 48MP primary camera powered by the Sony IMX586 sensor seen on most other flagships this year. The secondary camera is a 13MP shooter ultra-wide shooter which helps in capturing most of the scene. The camera performance and quality of this device are good but it is not exceptional.
Asus does offer some cool features for its flip camera. For example, you can capture a an excellent panorama thanks to the flip mechanism. You can also adjust the flip camera at any angle that you want between 0 to 180 degrees.
Battery
The battery on Asus 6Z is an excellent one as it comes with a 5000 mAh non-removable cell. On paper, this is a massive amount of battery capacity and it does perform the same. You will easily get two days of battery life on this device on normal usage and 1.5 days of battery life on heavy usage.
Verdict
In our opinion, Asus 6Z is a stellar smartphone and gives a tough competition to the likes of Redmi K20 Pro and OnePlus 7. If you prefer Stock Android experience and the want to not have pop-up camera or notch then Asus 6Z is your smartphone of choice.
