Windows 10, by default, comes with a pretty standard keyboard layout suitable for almost any kind of usage. But, it may not be suitable for your specific usage case. For example, if you frequently use a lot of special characters while typing or type in a different language, you might wanna experiment with another keyboard layout. Luckily, changing keyboard layouts is extremely easy on Windows 10 which we are going to discuss in this article.

Before you can change the keyboard layout, you should have at least two keyboard layouts available. By default, Windows will only have a single keyboard layout installed on your device. This means you will have to add additional keyboard layouts. The steps to install a new keyboard layout are given below.

Steps to Add a New Language

If you are looking to add a completely new language as your keyboard layout, follow these steps.

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Click the Gear icon which will take you to the settings.
  3. Go to the Time & Language.
  4. Navigate to the Language tab on the left sidebar.
  5. Under the Preferred languages section, click on the Add a language button.
  6. It will open up a language search window where you can choose your preferred language to install.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the new keyboard layout.
  8. As soon as it is installed, you will see it in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Steps to Add a New Keyboard Layout

If you are looking forward to adding a keyboard layout to the existing language, follow these steps instead.

  1. Click the Start menu button.
  2. Then the Gear icon.
  3. Navigate to the Time & Language.
  4. Then to the Language tab on the sidebar.
  5. Under the Preferred languages section, you will see your existing keyboard.
  6. Click on it and choose Options.
  7. Under Keyboards click on Add a keyboard.
  8. It will open a popup where you can add a new keyboard layout.

To switch between keyboard layouts, press Win + Space keys. As much as you press the space button by holding down the Windows key, it will switch between different languages. You will see a popup window at the bottom-right side of your screen.
