We are less than 6 months away from the launch of next Google Pixel smartphone. Also, this year’s Pixel smartphone promises to be the best one yet as seen from the leaks. This year, Google is finally going to improve the design of Pixel phones and also implement in-display fingerprint scanner on the devices. Reports also suggest that we might even see an in-display selfie camera on this phones. However, we will get to know more about it in the coming weeks.
Right now, we have the confirmed codenames of next Pixel series smartphones which will be Pixel 4 and 4 XL. Now, this codenames are found out from the AOSP source code and history of past years suggest that it is most likely to be real. However, the surprising thing here is that the AOSP source code has codenames of three Pixel devices.
This once again fires up rumors of a possible Pixel 4 Ultra but we have seen those rumors previously as well. Now, Google made this commit to AOSP source code to fix issues with Android’s SELinux. However, the company might have also name dropped its next Pixel phones for us. From the comments to this commit, we get codenames of next Pixel devices thanks to filename/path
As you can see from the image above, there are codenames such as Bonito, Coral, Crosshatch, Marlin, Needlefish and Wahoo. However, Marlin is the Pixel XL, Wahoo is the codename for Pixel 2 series whereas Crosshatch is the Pixel 3 XL codename. Also, Bonito is the codename for Pixel 3a XL. Therefore, only coral and needlefish remain as the new codenames.
One earlier report revealed that coral is the codename for Pixel 4. However, needlefish is unlikely to be a Pixel 4 XL codename because its codename is Flame. Therefore, it remains to be seen which device has the needlefish codename in Pixel 4 lineup.
