Samsung seems to be betting big on the foldable smartphone technology. We know that currently Samsung, Huawei and Royole are the only companies to have announced a foldable smartphone. Although, Samsung are Huawei’s devices are only likely to be officially available. As far as Huawei is concerned, its foldable smartphone is the Mate X. On Samsung’s end, it is the Galaxy Fold which is their first foldable smartphone. We also reported that Samsung is willing to supply its foldable display tech to other OEMs.
Now, a new report has emerged regarding Samsung and its foldable phones. According to Bloomberg, Samsung is working on two new smartphones at present. This is in order to take an early advantage in the foldable smartphone space. Samsung wants to get the advantage when it comes to foldable smartphones and take an early lead.
Bloomberg further reports that one of the Samsung foldable smartphones is a clamshell-like device. The other foldable device in development is a Huawei Mate X-style smartphone. This means that the device folds away from the user which is opposite to the Galaxy Fold.
Samsung is also planning to release its Galaxy Fold in April of this year. However, the device which is priced at $1980 will be sold in extremely limited quantity. On the other hand, we know that Xiaomi is soon releasing its first foldable smartphone. Also, Apple is expected to release a foldable iPhone by the end of 2020 but the company has not confirmed anything just yet.
However, the design of foldable smartphones still remains to be a concern for many. Some prefer the design of it to fold towards the user and others are in favour of it folding away from the user. On this matter, Bryan Ma, vice president of devices research at IDC said that “No one knows what the ideal design is yet, The time is ripe for experimentation. Many of these designs won’t be successful, but industry players will learn valuable lessons along the way.”
