Spotify now wants you to share location data in order to stop family plan abuse

Spotify Family Plan

There are some tricks in the technology industry which are often meant to be kept as a secret. Now, one of them is to create fake or random accounts in order to take advantage of the free monthly trials that almost everyone offers. Apart from that, there are tricks in the paid subscription plan as well. It has to be said that this is bad news for everyone who was using one such trick. Here, we are talking about Spotify which offers a free plan as well as a paid subscription. We were aware that there are thousands of users who were abusing its family plan.

We will also try and explain how it happens exactly. First of all, you must know that Spotify offers an individual plan as well as a family plan. Note that the family plan offers access to 5 family members at a time. However, the family plan is a great deal when compared to 5 individual plans. So we have known that people were sharing the family plan among them so as to cut costs. In Spotify’s view, this is an abuse of the family plan which is meant to be used by family members only.

For this reason, the company has now announced that users need to share their location data as well so that the family plan abuse can be stopped. This means that you will not be able to access the family plan from a location other than the owner. It has to be said that the family plan was used by people from foreign countries as well by making accounts in the US. However, this will most certainly be stopped from now on.

Spotify says that “This data is encrypted and can be edited by the plan owner as needed,” and added that “The location data that is collected during Premium Family account creation is only used by Spotify for that purpose. Once verification of a family member’s home address is completed, we do not store their location data or track their location at any time.”
