This AI learnt Chess playing by reading about the game rather than playing it

Game of Chess

We have heard about AI or artificial intelligence is a technology which learns everything. This method of making machines learn about things is called machine learning. However, we have often seen that AI systems are made to practise something in order to make them learn it. But we have found an interesting report where AI learnt about playing a game just by reading about it. While it is common to practise a game and master it for AI, it is new to master it just by learning.

One AI has achieved this rare feat and has mastered the game of Chess just by reading about the rules and gameplay. However, it is also said that this AI has never played a game of Chess to practise it. This algorithm of Chess is named as SentiMATE has been developed by a team of researchers studying at University College London. This AI is said to evaluate the game of Chess and its move just by going on expert commentators describing them.

The team is said to have analyzed about 2,700 chess game commentaries available online for the algorithm to learn about it. On their algorithm, the researchers said: “The next step in the advancement of natural language processing is to convert this learnt information into tangible actions to help solve real-world tasks, We felt that learning strategy from text-based data could be a very important research avenue to explore.”

Even the researchers are known to have been surprised by some of SentiMATE’s moves once they made it learn the game. The algorithm was able to make moves such as castling which means to defend the King as well as the Castle in a game of Chess. As well as forking where one move made threatens two or more pieces of the opponent. That being said, the AI failed to defeat conventional chess bots yet it showed promise.
