Uber is a company which was found a few years ago with a mission to provide ride-sharing services to its customers quickly and easily. We have also known that Uber has since expanded to various countries starting from the US and it is now operating in Asian countries as well.
Apart from the taxi rides that Uber provides, the company is also testing autonomous car services in the United States. However, we dare say that the self-driving project from Uber has been hugely dented now and it is almost dead.
This is because Uber has laid off all of the employees which the company invested in the self-driving project who are approximately close to 100. Laying off has been done by the company in Pittsburgh and San Francisco of the U.S. Apart from that, we should remind you that Uber has already shut down its operations in Arizona since May after one of its self-driving cars was involved in a major crash.
But, we should note that this is not the end as Uber is still working on self-driving cars for Pittsburgh. The employees that have been laid off can apply for a new position at Uber known as Mission Specialists in either of the two cities mentioned above.
Now, this position involves the employees to give feedback to developers from on-road and test tracks. Also, it is known that the fatal crash in Arizona prompted the company to pull out of the self-driving permit application process. But, the company has still maintained the stance that it is committed to bringing self-driving cars to the US and Uber has claimed to come back on roads with their autonomous cars in the coming months. Apart from that, Uber is also testing the autonomous car program in Toronto, Canada as well which is also put on hold for a while.
