WhatsApp adds ‘Writing Help’ to polish message tone with privacy-first AI

WhatsApp adds ‘Writing Help’ to polish message tone with privacy-first AI

Meta is rolling out a new AI feature called Writing Help inside WhatsApp, targeted at helping people find the right words and tone before hitting send button. The tool suggests alternative versions of a draft in styles like professional, funny, or supportive and is meant to make everyday messages clearer, kinder, or more engaging without extra effort. To access it, start typing in any one‑to‑one or group chat and tap the new pencil icon that appears.

The experience is designed to feel quick and familiar. Once the pencil icon is tapped, WhatsApp shows a set of polished suggestions based on the original text, keeping the meaning intact while adjusting tone and phrasing. Users can choose a version as is or edit it further. This is similar in idea to tone‑adjust features seen in popular keyboards but integrated directly into WhatsApp, so there’s no need to switch apps or copy text around.

Privacy is a major part of the launch. Meta says Writing Help uses a dedicated “Private Processing” approach that keeps message content protected while AI works in the background. According to the company, messages are processed in a secure environment and aren’t stored, and neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the original drafts or the AI‑generated suggestions. The feature is optional and off by default, so people can enable it only if they want to use it.

Writing Help is part of a broader plan to bring helpful AI to messaging while respecting user privacy. Earlier this year, WhatsApp added AI‑powered Message Summaries for unread chats under the same privacy model. Together, the tools aim to reduce the friction of busy chats by summarizing what was missed and helping craft the right response in a tone that suits the moment.

Availability begins with English in the United States and several other countries, with plans to expand to more languages and regions later in the year. That means early users can try the feature now and expect steady improvements as Meta gathers feedback and fine-tunes the experience for a wider rollout.
