You will most probably only notice it once your drive starts showing up in red instead of the typical blue. Obviously it means that you are running out of space and you should do something about it. In extreme conditions, when the available space is too low, Windows itself will notify you to free up some space.

But manually doing it every once in a while can be frustrating. Especially if you are someone who works with a lot of files on a daily basis, cleaning up the temp files manually can be very time-taking as well. Don’t worry. Windows comes with an inbuilt feature that allows you to automatically clean up unnecessary files piled up on your PC making sure that you are getting the full benefit of your storage. In this article, we are going to take a look at this feature and how to enable it. So without further due let’s jump into it.

Steps to Automatically Save Space on Windows 10

  1. Click on the Start menu button.
  2. Then, click on the Settings (gear) icon.
  3. Then go to System.
  4. On the left sidebar, navigate to Storage.
  5. The first thing you will see on the screen is a toggle button. Simply enable it. Why? The explanation is below.

Windows 10 comes with a feature known as the “Storage Sense” which can automatically clean up the unnecessary files piled up on your computer. By default, this feature will delete the temporary files that are the leftovers of other programs which are either running or uninstalled in the past and the files on your recycle bin that are older than 30 days. Storage sense is configurable to delete unused files in your downloads folder as well.

You can also run storage sense manually whenever you feel like it. Simply click on the Configure Storage Sense or run it now link underneath the toggle button. You can either configure storage sense based on your preferences or run a manual cleanup whenever you run out of space. As simple as that. Once you have this option enabled, Windows will automatically do the cleanup for you making sure that you do not run out of space because of unnecessary file. So what are you waiting for?
