In 2017 OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5 which was the best seller device, but soon it lost its OnePlus charm as it was not with the design language which was being adopted the 18:9 ratio display. OnePlus first had one device a year strategy with the OnePlus One & OnePlus 2, with the income of OnePlus 3 we did got the OnePlus 3T and then the 5 & 5T. 5T was a great phone in design as well in performance, it would have survived another 6 months i.e. typically when the 6T will launch. Still, OnePlus came with the all-new OnePlus 6, let us find out what new we have in the OnePlus 6 and if it is really worth for your upgrade in the review ahead.
Design & Build
OnePlus had been using the metal frames and builds for a long time. Only on the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X, we saw plastic and glass build. With OnePlus 6 we get the OnePlus X charm back with the glass back. This time there are three different versions of the same phone as a Marvel Avengers Edition, and two different colors with two distinct feel. If you are looking for a phone then the OnePlus 6 Mirror Black finish is the best option.
All the three options look quite good, although the in-hand feel of all the three phones is totally different. The Mirror black is slippery and at the same time will get smudged, the Avengers Edition have carbon fiber pattern which gives it another distinct feel, while the last one the Midnight Black comes with a corroded glass which gives it a feel like a metal back.
Talking about the placements the phone comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 both at the front and the back. On the front, we do get a notch with the front camera and other sensors. On the left side, we have the famous alert slider, while on the right we have the three different buttons.
On the bottom, we have a single speaker, the Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the back, we have the dual camera setup, a dual tone flash, and a rectangular fingerprint scanner. The phone feels premium in hand in any of the color types, and the metal build does make it one of the toughest phone in the competition.
Display
The phone comes with a 6.28-inch display, which does come with a notch on the display. On the software side OnePlus did make it easy for us to hide the notch. The resolution of the display is on a lower side with just 1080 x 2280. OnePlus clearly said about the display resolution with OnePlus 5, that customers need a vibrant and a good panel not of a higher resolution one.
OnePlus 6 owns an AMOLED Panel which is having the right amount of vibrancy in the colors and looks pretty good even on the contrast side. Although the display is bright enough to be used in bright sunlight, you will have issues while using at night, as the lowest brightness setting of the screen is on a higher side.
Performance
The phones come with the best in class Snapdragon 845 SoC, assisted by 6GB or 8GB of Ram with 128GB & 256 GB Storage options. The RAM is enough to keep all the different apps in memory most of the time. Also, the processor is fast enough to process most of the day to day apps with ease. Gaming is also no issue with the phone as it comes with the top of the line SOC from Qualcomm. The OnePlus 6 is capable of scoring 268.385 on AnTuTu, which is a respectable score.
On Geekbench we can easily score 2389 & 9013 for single core and multicore respectively. Even in different power saving modes, the phone is capable of performing really great and it does the best job of keeping a balance between battery life and performance.
Camera
The phone comes with a host of improvements on the camera side as compared to the past devices from the company. The primary 16 MP Shooter at the back comes with OIS which is the most demanded feature in the past. The phone does have a secondary 20 MP shooter which is mostly taking care of low light and depth effects. The rear camera is a capable unit and shoots some really good images. The colors reproduced were nice and crisp and even the portrait mode was a great improvement.
The front camera of the device is also a good shooter and is capable of using different filters, effects, stickers and other options. OnePlus 6 is now capable with 4K recording both on the front and at the back
Battery
OnePlus 6 on the battery front comes with a 3300 mAh capacity. Although the 5V 4A Dash Charger changes the game, as it is capable of filling up the battery in just 1 Hour, which is really fast. The phone can easily last for more than a working day when used as a daily driver for a bit of gaming, a bit of social media, and lots of calls.
While if you use the phone like a real maniac for gaming then it will barely last for a half working day. The battery life of the phone is quite good overall and you can keep the phone with you trusted for all the jobs.
Verdict
OnePlus 6 is a capable device and will carry most of your works with ease. Although you will have to keep in mind about the display as seeing side by side with a true flagship from Samsung and Apple you can clearly see the difference in the panels. Rest for the price tag the phone is a good deal. There are even better phones available in comparison which you must have a look before finalizing the one.
