Motorola launched the all-new Moto E5 series with Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus, and the Moto E5 Play. The Moto E5 Play is the cheapest of the all three while the Moto E5 Plus is the costliest of the three. Today we are going to review the Moto E5 which sits between the two. Although of the three only the Moto E5 Plus is the best of the lot and worth the money to spend. Still, if you are looking at a budget and need to get a good device then Moto E5 proves to be a good choice. Let us look forward to the Moto E5 and see how it turns out to be the best of the three in the price it is being offered in the review ahead.
Design & Build
The Moto E5 comes with a plastic build, though the back looks like glass with its work. The phone has an 18:9 ratio display and hence comes with a tall boy display. The Moto E5 although feels tough in hand and made to last, but comes with an overall plastic build with not even a metallic frame. Around the display there are bezels which do makes it look bulky and at the same time from the previous era.
Talking about the placements we have the camera at the back in the traditional round style with a camera and flash embedded into the unit. We have the fingerprint scanner at the back with the Moto logo. On the front, we have the 5.7inch display which has the front camera, flash, and sensors above the display, on the bottom we have the Motorola branding.
Display
The device comes with a 5.7 – inch display which has an HD+ resolution which is 720 x 1440 pixels. The unit is an IPS LCD one, this makes it an average performer. Colors and contrasts produced from the display are average and not something the device can be proud of. Viewing angles of the phone are not so great and there are some color shifts which you can observe especially on the extreme angles.
With the inbuilt software, the display can be tweaked with one’s preference still there will not be a burst of colors. You can get a number of different combinations from the display in terms of color performance. Also, the thing to note is that you will have an issue with using the phone at night, because the panel cannot get really low, and might hurt your eyes during pitch dark usage. During the day your device can perform well especially in daylight legibility.
Performance
Moto E5 is offered with a Snapdragon 425 SoC from Qualcomm. The chipset has a 1.4GHz Quad Core CPU which is made to last. It is further supported with Adreno 308, with the combination of the two the device is capable of performing good up to a level. The phone comes with the latest Android 8.0 Oreo and will surely be upgraded to the latest Android P, hence the device will improve its performance with the latest operating system.
There is no point in talking about the benchmarks as the phone is not a capable device, and is just made to be used for normal day to day usage. Coupled with 2GB of RAM the phone is capable of multitasking with a maximum of 2 apps, hence be sure about the same. Another thing to note is the phone will not be able to game heavily or even with medium games. Although you can play Subway Surfer and other normal games which are not much RAM demanding.
Camera
Motorola offers the device with a single camera unit both at the back and the front. This makes it lacks especially with the competition. There are software tweaks with which you can take some nice pictures but overall the hardware of the phone is not up to the mark. On the front, we get a 5MP unit while on the back we get a 13MP unit which is assisted by a LED Flash.
Pictures produced both by the rear camera, and the front camera is mediocre and you will have to suffer on both the ends. The pictures don’t have a good color reproduction, at the night the pictures appear to be grainy. Overall the pictures tend to look good only during the daytime and are good to be posting only on Social Media.
Battery
The phone comes with a 4000 mAh battery, this makes it capable of offering a good performance for a full day. The Moto E5 can easily assist you the whole day without any issue with average usage of calling and social media. Although if you need to be using the device only for calling then it can even last for more than 2 days.
Due to the Stock UI, the performance of the phone, especially in the battery life, is quite good, and there is no compromise on the department. The phone is offered with a 1.5 amp charger which takes some time to charge the device hence you must always use the overnight charging technique to charge the device.
Verdict
The Moto E5 comes with two different color options which are the same as with its other devices. The phone retails at 9,999INR which is kind of high for the phone with 2Gigs of RAM. There are devices which are offered with 4Gigs of RAM and is sold under the price tag. Motorola is surely charging a premium for the brand name. Although if you need a durable device with a brand name to support you in case of any mishap then Motorola’s Moto E5 is the device to go. Although do note that if you have the budget to get the Moto E5 Plus then do go for the same, please read our review of the Moto E5 Plus for more information.
