Like Google, Apple also releases frequent iOS updates to ensure that iOS is bug-free and new features are also released through iOS updates. In the recently commenced WWDC 2019, Apple released the 13th iteration of its iOS operating software. iOS 13 packs multiple useful features.
Some of the noteworthy features of iOS 13 are Dark Mode, new Sign in with Apple privacy feature, swipe typing, and new photos and video editing tools. iOS 13 will be available by early September for the general public. If you want to make sure that you get the latest iOS as soon as it is available, you can enable auto-iOS update in your iOS device.
Starting from iOS 12, Apple introduced a new feature that allows you to enable on disable automatic iOS updates in your iPhones and iPads. This feature automatically downloads the latest version of iOS whenever it is available for your device. The updates will be installed overnight and you will be asked before the installation. The feature notifies you before downloading the update and you can enable or disable this option as per your convenience.
The auto-iOS update feature removes the hassle of manually checking iOS update as you will be notified automatically once an update is available for your iPhone.
Also, another benefit of using this feature is that your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will always run on the latest operating system which is recommended by many security analysts. If your iOS device is running on the latest version of iOS, you will be protected from vulnerabilities and malware that could lead to loss of personal data. Apple quickly patches known vulnerabilities and releases iOS updates to protect users against them.
How to enable or disable auto iOS updates?
- Tap on “Settings” app in your iOS device. Make sure that your device is running on iOS 12 and auto-iOS update is a feature that is available only on devices running iOS 12 or newer.
- Tap on “General” and then choose “Software Update.”
- Select “Software Update” option and then enable the toggle against “Automatic Updates”
- Once you have turned on the toggle, a confirmation message will appear on the screen saying “The device will automatically install iOS software updates.”
Now that you have enabled this option, software updates will be automatically downloaded when an update is available. Whenever an update will be available, you will get a notification on your lock screen and a badge will also appear in your Settings app indicating that a new update is available and ready to be installed.
However, this feature could be annoying as you will be reminded frequently whenever an update is available. You can turn off this feature by simply turning the toggle button to off position.
If you are concerned that the iOS update will eat up your cellular plan, do not worry. The auto-iOS update feature works only with Wi-fi. It means that the iOS update will not be installed on your cellular data and the system will wait until your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
