How to Adjust Screen Brightness in Windows 10

Protecting your eyes is more important than anything while using a computer. You should be extremely cautious about the screen brightness especially when staring at the screen for hours without any breaks. That’s why it is always recommended to take regular breaks every 20 minutes to allow your eyes and body to relax. But sometimes this may not be possible. Working on urgent projects will force you to stare at the screen without any breaks at all.

In these kinds of situations, the best thing you can do is adjusting the brightness so that the emitted light is minimum. Luckily Windows 10 has a built-in feature that allows you to control your monitor brightness, if the device supports it. In this article we are going to take a look at the steps required to change screen brightness on your Windows 10 PC.

Keep in mind that you may not be able to adjust the brightness if you have a monitor or screen that doesn’t support it. Most of the laptops come with this feature but monitors not. So make sure that the feature is present before continuing with this tutorial

To Change Brightness in Windows 10

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Go to Settings (the gear icon).
  3. Then to System.
  4. On the left sidebar, choose Display.
  5. Simply adjust the Change brightness slider to the appropriate settings.

On Windows 10, version 1903 and later, the brightness slider is directly accessible from the action center (the message icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen).

If you want Windows to automatically adjust the screen brightness for you, and if your device supports such a function, you will see an option named “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes” in the display settings screen. Simply check it and Windows will automatically adjust the brightness of your screen based on the lighting conditions. If you don’t see that option, that means your device does not support it. If it is still not working even after enabling that option, you can take a look at our article on fixing adaptive brightness issues.

How to Choose the Perfect Brightness?

Now that you know how to adjust the brightness of your screen on Windows 10. But, what is the perfect brightness to go with? The only answer is whatever you feel comfortable with.

Except for general facts like you should use less brightness at night time compared to the daytime, you should not set it at an uncomfortable range, and such things, it is completely up to you what brightness you should go with.

The best way to find out is to try sliding the brightness left and right it and see what makes you more comfortable to work with. You should be able to clearly see the text on the screen, but it should not hurt your eyes.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that less brightness always doesn’t mean it is good. If you have to stare at the screen closely to understand what is displayed, it is not a good thing for your eyes. You should be able to comfortably read whatever on the screen without struggling. So do not always go for less brightness. Instead, keep a balance.
