How to Fix Samsung Keyboard Lagging on an Android Phone

How to Fix Samsung Keyboard Lagging on an Android Phone

Samsung phones and tablets come with Samsung Keyboard as the default keyboard. For many users, it works well for messaging, searches, emails, and everyday typing. But sometimes the keyboard starts responding slowly, misses taps, freezes briefly, or takes a moment to appear.

That can make even a simple message frustrating.

You could switch to Gboard or another keyboard, but you may prefer to keep using Samsung Keyboard and its features. Before changing keyboards, try these fixes. Start with the simple steps first, and leave the options that reset your settings until later.

Menu names can vary slightly between Galaxy models and One UI versions. If you cannot find an option, use the search bar in Settings.

1. Force Stop Samsung Keyboard

Force-stopping the keyboard closes its current process. Android will start it again the next time you tap a text field. This can clear a temporary glitch without changing your keyboard settings.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Apps.

  3. Find and select Samsung Keyboard. If it is not listed, tap the filter or sorting option and enable Show system apps.

  4. Tap Force stop, then confirm.

  5. Open Messages or another app and try typing again.

If the keyboard still lags, continue to the next fix. Samsung also recommends force-stopping the keyboard when troubleshooting keyboard problems.

2. Clear the Keyboard Cache

Temporary app files can sometimes cause problems. Clearing the cache removes those temporary files; it should not erase your saved words or reset your keyboard preferences.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.

  2. Select Samsung Keyboard. You may need to show system apps.

  3. Tap Storage.

  4. Choose Clear cache.

  5. Open a text field and test the keyboard.

Be careful not to tap Clear data by mistake. Clearing data may remove saved keyboard settings and learned words. Samsung lists clearing the keyboard cache as a troubleshooting step.

3. Turn Off Enhanced Accuracy

The Samsung Keyboard includes typing features that predict or suggest words as you write. These can be useful, but if you notice the lag mainly while typing or accepting predictions, try turning off the relevant prediction setting temporarily.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap General management.

  3. Select Samsung Keyboard settings.

  4. Look under More typing options or the prediction-related settings. The exact label may vary by software version.

  5. Turn off Enhanced accuracy, if that option appears.

  6. Test typing in a message or notes app.

This setting is not available under the same name on every Galaxy device. If you do not see it, skip this step rather than changing unrelated settings.

4. Optimise Your Device and Restart It

If the phone is low on memory or running many processes, the keyboard may not be the only app that feels slow. Restarting the phone can clear temporary system issues, while Device Care can help you check the phone’s general condition.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Battery and device care or Device care.

  3. Tap Optimise now, if available.

  4. Restart your phone.

  5. Try Samsung Keyboard again.

This is a general performance step, not a guaranteed keyboard fix. If other apps are also lagging, check available storage and close apps you are not using.

5. Disable Third-Party Keyboard Content Temporarily

Samsung Keyboard can include or support additional content and integrations, such as GIFs, stickers, and other services. If the lag happens when opening the keyboard toolbar or browsing this content, temporarily disabling integrations may help identify whether one is involved.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.

  2. Look for Select third-party content to use or a similar option.

  3. Turn off the available integrations one at a time—for example, GIF or sticker services.

  4. Test typing after each change.

The available options depend on your device and software version. If you do not use these integrations, leaving them off may simplify the keyboard experience. If the lag continues, turn them back on if you want them.

6. Check for a Samsung Keyboard Update

An outdated keyboard app may have a bug that a newer version fixes. Samsung Keyboard’s version and update options may be available through its settings page.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.

  2. Scroll down and tap About Samsung Keyboard.

  3. Check whether an update is available and follow the prompts.

On some Galaxy devices, you can also open a text field, tap the keyboard settings icon, and navigate to About Samsung Keyboard. Samsung notes that this page displays the keyboard’s software version and may offer an update.

Also check for a phone software update under Settings > Software update > Download and install. Updates can include fixes for system components that affect keyboard performance.

7. Reset Samsung Keyboard Settings

If none of the earlier steps works, reset the keyboard settings. This can resolve problems caused by a changed setting, but it will return your keyboard preferences to their defaults.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.

  2. Scroll down and tap Reset to default settings.

  3. Select Reset keyboard settings.

  4. Confirm the reset.

  5. Test the keyboard again.

This option resets keyboard preferences; it is different from resetting the whole phone. Samsung’s keyboard support page distinguishes resetting keyboard settings from clearing cache and other reset options.

If Samsung Keyboard Still Lags

Try to identify whether the problem happens everywhere or only in one app. If it occurs in a single messaging or social app, update that app and test typing in another one. If it happens across the phone, restart the device and check whether a recently installed app or keyboard-related setting may be contributing.

You can also test the phone in Safe Mode. If the Samsung keyboard works normally there, a third-party app may be causing interference. Samsung recommends Safe Mode as a troubleshooting step for keyboard problems.

Switching to another keyboard is an option, but it does not have to be your first move. Try force-stopping Samsung keyboard, clearing its cache, checking for updates, and resetting its settings before making that decision.

Final Thoughts

Samsung Keyboard lag can make everyday typing feel harder than it should. Start by force-stopping the keyboard and clearing its cache. Then check typing features, update the keyboard and phone, and reset keyboard settings only if needed.

Avoid Clear data unless you are comfortable losing saved keyboard preferences and learned words. If the issue continues after these steps, contact Samsung Support or test the device in Safe Mode to help find out whether the cause is the keyboard, another app, or a wider performance issue.
