Last week, we all heard about the terrible attacks that took place in New Zealand’s Mosque. It is not generally the best idea to report about terrorist attacks. However, this time the attack has a connection with Facebook, sort of. Well, one of the terrorists who is apparently a ‘White Supremacist’ live broadcast the entire incident on Facebook. Now, the company has given the entire world an update about the attacks and what actions Facebook took in regards to it.
First of all, Facebook says that the live broadcast done by the terrorist was viewed less than 200 times. But the surprising thing is that none of the viewers from live broadcast reported the video. Basically, it means that all the live viewers of this video had the same ideology as the attacker. Facebook also reports that the removed the video and it had only 4000 views at the time of removal.
The company also said that the first report of this video came in 29 minutes after the live broadcast started. However, the live broadcast had already ended at that time. Facebook also claims that before the video was reported, one of the users on 8chan already posted a link to the mirror of the original video. This means that the video went viral from that 8chan mirror and not the original one.
Facebook also marked the video as terrorist attacks which means if someone praises or supports that video then it is against Facebook guidelines. Also, the accounts of terrorists have been removed from Facebook and Instagram as well. Also, Facebook is actively removing any fake accounts of the terrorists as well. Moreover, Facebook says they removed 1.5 million videos of the incident in just 24 hours.
Apparently, 1.2 million videos were blocked from even uploading so as to avoid it going viral. Facebook says they have also shared 800 visually-distinct videos related to the attack to Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) for further analysis.
