Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Reach End of Support: October 2026 Was Their Last Update
Google's October 2026 Pixel update was the last for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Here's what it means, how to check, and why the Pixel 6a isn't affected.
If you still use a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, this one is for you. Google’s October 2026 Pixel update was the last one these phones will get. The November 2026 Pixel update doesn’t include them, so there are no more Android updates or security patches from here on.
The Pixel 6a is a different story. People often mix these phones up, so I’ll clear that up below.
Quick answer: The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have reached end of support. Their final update was the October 2026 release with the October 5, 2026 security patch level, and they won’t get new Android or security updates after that. The Pixel 6a is not affected, because Google supports it until July 2027.
What happened
The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro went on sale on October 28, 2021. Google counts support from the month a phone first went on sale in the US Google Store, so their window closed in October 2026. At launch, Google promised three Android version updates and five years of security patches. It later stretched OS updates to five years too, so both ended together.
This wasn’t a surprise. In July 2026, Google said Android 17 QPR1 would be the last big update for these phones. QPR stands for quarterly platform release, Google’s name for its mid-cycle feature drops. QPR1 went stable in September, and the final October update began rolling out on October 6, 2026, with fixes for keyboard bugs and distorted VoIP ringtones. The phones also skipped the August 2026 patch, though they got the September and October ones.
If you want to see what this month’s patch brings for phones that are still supported, read our Android November 2026 security update coverage.
Is the Pixel 6a affected?
No. The Pixel 6a launched in July 2022, so its support runs until July 2027. It was part of the October 2026 update and is still inside its support window. I haven’t been able to confirm the full November device list yet, so if you own a 6a, check for the update yourself in Settings.
What Pixel 6 end of support means in practice
Your phone won’t stop working tomorrow. Calls, chats and the camera all keep going. The risk is quieter than that. Every month, Google patches newly found security holes in Android, and your phone won’t get those fixes anymore. Over time, the list of known, unpatched problems on it keeps growing.
Apps are the other thing to watch. Banking and payment apps tend to be stricter about older, unpatched software. I couldn’t find anything official saying a particular bank will block the Pixel 6, so I won’t claim that. Just know it can happen with phones that stop getting updates.

How to check your last update
Go to Settings > About phone > Android version and look at Android security update. If it says October 5, 2026, you have the final update. If it shows an older date, open Settings > System > Software updates and install whatever is waiting. Google lists support dates for every model on its official Pixel update policy page.
How to stay safer if you keep it
If you’re not ready to switch, install the final update first. Stick to apps from the Play Store, keep them updated, and avoid sideloaded APK files and links from people you don’t know. Check Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Google Play system update now and then, though I couldn’t find an official timeline for how long those keep arriving. My honest advice: move banking and payments to a newer phone when you can.
Upgrade options
If you’re buying another Pixel, pick one with plenty of support left. Here’s when recent models stop getting updates:
| Model | Updates until |
|---|---|
| Pixel 7 / 7 Pro | October 2027 |
| Pixel 7a | May 2028 |
| Pixel 8 series | October 2030 |
| Pixel 9 series | August 2031 |
| Pixel 9a | March or April 2032 |
| Pixel 10 series | August 2032 |
| Pixel 10a | March 2033 |
I’d skip the Pixel 7 series, since it has only about a year left. The Pixel 10 and 10a give you years of updates, and my Google Pixel 10 review covers what it’s like. The Pixel 11 series is out too, but I don’t have its confirmed support date, so check Google’s page or this running list of Pixel end-of-life dates.
What’s next
Before you switch phones, back up your photos so nothing gets left behind. My guide on how to back up Android photos to a Windows PC with Quick Share makes that easy. Pixel 6a owners have until July 2027, and Pixel 7 owners should start planning for October 2027.
