Nexus Devices that get the Latest Version of Android Directly from Google

Nexus devices are everywhere. What about their update? How do they get updates? Directly from google or from some third party vendors? Here is the answer for most of your questions with a list of nexus devices that get the latest version of android directly from google.

Android version updates

These are the Nexus devices that get the latest version of Android directly from Google itself.

  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus 6
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 9
  • Nexus 7
  • Nexus 10

The time took to get a notification regarding the official release of the update varies according to your device carrier. Normally, it takes upto 2-3 weeks from the date of releasing the official updates. If you are lucky enough, it can reach your device even earlier.

Security patches

To see which nexus devices will get security patches, check the Public Nexus Security Bulletin. Also take a look into the Nexus Security Bulletin for August.

If you want to check when your device got the security patch last time, follow the simple steps given below.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap About phone or About tablet according to your smartphone.
  3. You could see the last date your device got android security patch under “Android security patch level” option.

How longer you can enjoy the Nexus Updates?

Your nexus devices won’t get the Android version updates or the Security patches forever. After a certain period, the manufacturer or Google itself will stop the support for the device. Then onwards, the device won’t get the latest updates to be downloaded. As per google, nexus devices will receive Android version updates for at least two years from when the device became available on the Google Store and Security patches for 3 years from availability or 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device. Here is a table to help you have a better idea of the Android version update support of the nexus devices.

Device No guaranteed Android version updates after
Nexus 6P September 2017
Nexus 5X September 2017
Nexus 9 October 2016
Nexus 6 October 2016
