Mac is one of the OSs out there and surely, the app optimization for this OS is simply amazing. If you’ve ever heard about Total Commander, you know that this is a very powerful software for Windows users. However, Mac OS has its own share of this sweet pie, called Commander One. Yeah, they are both commanding something, or so it seems, but is Commander One really worth its price and features? If you want to find out, you better stick with me, as I’m about to do a fully comprehensive review of Commander One. Let’s jump right into it!
Interface
When it comes to the interface, Commander One is pretty shiny at first glance. You know, there is a bit of everything for everyone. For example, the app sports a dual-pane view, making it much easier to use. Being a dual-pane file manager, you’ll find your workflow very smooth, responsive and sweet. In the top left corner, we have buttons like Network and Process Viewer and this applies to both sides. Just under that, there are various directories where you can quickly search for the file or folder you need. Of course, the main feature is a huge dual-pane interface, sporting all of your files and folders.
What I like about the interface is the support for hotkeys which are clearly displayed in the bottom part of your Commander One window. To make things better, you can customize them on your own and create your perfect hotkey combo. If you want to copy something, well, just press F5, create a new folder with F7 and paste it with F6. If that isn’t simple, I don’t know what is! The interface is pretty comprehensible, smooth and very easy to get into.
Features
With all of these impressive interface features, Commander One must surely have an impressive set of features when it comes to the performance. But, is it really true? I think it’s time to find out now.
Great speed and optimization
Let’s begin with the feature that’s probably going to make you thirsty for Commander One. Yes, it’s the amazing speed and optimization. When it comes to speed, Commander One is pretty much one of the best apps for Mac out there. I mean, you can try it for yourself and see what I’m talking about. I was constantly moving and editing my files, so I’ve done a lot of complex and simple operations. I was amazed at how Commander One performed.
The optimization is quite good, allowing you to save more time and disk space at the same time. As this is an FTP app, you can save your space by not keeping some of the files on your HDD. Instead, a quality cloud service should do the job! Should you want to copy or move your data to a cloud storage, you can do that, too! Eltima did a pretty good job of optimizing this app for speed and accuracy.
Amazing FTP capabilities
FTP is what we need and it’s what we get here. Hell yeah! Commander One ditches a single panel in favor of two of them and lets you connect to remote servers through FTP, FTPS, and SFTP. With FTPS, you can now transfer your files to a remote server with higher security and with SFTP, your files will undergo more reliable data transfer and stream.
Unlimited tabs
For those of you who often perform complex operations and work with tons of files, these are the bright news. It’s cool to open several tabs and work, but how about unlimited tabs? Well, that’s where Commander One comes into play. Not only that you can open an unlimited number of tabs, but those tabs contain a separate info about each and every folder. This adds that bonus layer of versatility and of course, multitasking. In the end, Commander One is truly a software for multitasking purposes.
Edit your files on fly
Editing your files was never this easy as it’s with this app. If you want to edit your files, you can simply use a hotkey or click on the Edit option. Under this term, I think about renaming your file or editing some basic info about it. Now that’s all cool and awesome, but so is file editing on the fly. If you simply want to rename your file as you move it, you can do that and that’s such a cool option!
Night Theme
Nightbirds like me will be happy to see that there is a night theme which grants you a plethora of colors to choose from. During the night, you want to ditch a white background in favor of a dark-grey or black background for all of your apps. I can’t guarantee for the other apps, though, but Commander One lets you do that. It helps to reduce the eye strain, allowing you to save your eyes for the future.
Pros
- Comprehensive interface,
- Dual-pane FTP and workflow,
- Speed and reliability are admirable,
- Hotkeys are a welcome addition,
- Upgradable to Pro Pack,
- Unlimited tabs grant bonus versatility.
Cons
- Single-pane view is absent,
- Pro Pack is quite expensive (around thirty bucks).
Conclusion
At the end of the day, you probably want to know is this app worth a buy. Of course, you want to get what you really pay for and in this case, Commander One nails it. Even with the basic version, Commander One will provide you with all the necessary tools to successfully transfer and edit your files as well as do more complex operations. On top of that, Commander One is probably the best software in this category for this operating system, meaning that technical support is brilliant. My only complaint would be this Pro Pack, which surely adds some amazing features, but hey- get thirty bucks and pay more if you want them! Otherwise, this app is phenomenal and if you are an experienced Mac user, you know how capable Commander One is.
